i want to design my own book cover but i am a total newbie at this so is there a program i could use that is quite straight forward (stupid proof )

or would i be better off getting a professional to deal with it any help gratefully received

On the front of the cover you put the title and the author. On the spine you do the same but smaller and parhaps the publisher at the bottom.

Your need to give the typesetter a piece of paper so he spells it all correctly.
