‘Too Late!’ Trump Defies Court as White House Ballroom Rolls On

Donald Trump has declared his controversial White House ballroom project unstoppable — openly contradicting his own Justice Department as it argues in court that the plan remains flexible and subject to review.

In a defiant Truth Social post on Sunday, the president insisted there was “no practical or reasonable way to go back,” listing a catalogue of ordered materials and declaring in all caps: “IT IS TOO LATE!”

The statement sits uneasily alongside the administration’s legal position. Just days earlier, Justice Department lawyers told a federal judge that the project could still be modified and would await approval from two federal advisory panels before any above-ground construction begins in April.

That contradiction did not go unnoticed.

U.S. District Judge Richard Leon, a George W. Bush appointee, is now weighing whether construction should be paused following a lawsuit from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which argues the administration bypassed legally required reviews and congressional approval.

Trump has framed the ballroom — already under construction underground — as a matter of national security, citing bulletproof windows, anti-drone roofing and extensive structural work. Critics say the demolition of the East Wing annex and the rapid pace of construction have locked in a project the public never had a chance to debate.

The National Trust warned that every day of continued work makes reversal harder, submitting expert testimony arguing the subterranean foundations effectively predetermine the final structure.

Judge Leon appeared skeptical last week, pressing government lawyers on Trump’s authority to fund the project with hundreds of millions in private donations — including contributions from corporations holding major federal contracts.

Meanwhile, the two review panels overseeing the project are now led by Trump appointees after he removed Biden-era members, raising further concerns over oversight.

With Trump publicly daring critics to stop him and the courts yet to rule, the fight over the “People’s House” is fast becoming another test of presidential power — and how far Trump believes it extends.

Key Takeaways:

  • Trump says White House ballroom is irreversible — contradicting DOJ court filings

  • Federal judge questions legality of funding and lack of public review

  • Critics warn construction is being “locked in” before courts can intervene
