Second Guthrie Note Sparks Fresh Fears As Ransom Demand Vanishes

A second note linked to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie has triggered fresh alarm after investigators confirmed it contained no ransom demand, no deadline, and apparent responses to the family’s public pleas.

The message, received Friday by KOLD anchor Mary Coleman, differs sharply from an earlier ransom letter that demanded millions in Bitcoin and set two deadlines. Guthrie, 84 — the mother of Today host Savannah Guthrie — has been missing for a week after police concluded she was abducted from her Tucson, Arizona, home.

Coleman said law enforcement does not believe the second message qualifies as a ransom note at all. Instead, it appears designed to prove authorship and show the sender is closely following the case — including the family’s social media appeals for proof Guthrie is alive.

According to Coleman, the note was coherent, carefully structured and similar in tone to the first letter, despite originating from a different IP address. Authorities believe the sender again used a secure server to conceal their identity.

Crucially, the second note arrived just hours before a third FBI search of Guthrie’s $1 million home. During that search, agents discovered a previously missed rooftop camera and seized a dark SUV, developments that suggest investigators believe key evidence may still be on or near the property.

Nancy Guthrie was reported missing on February 1 after failing to attend her regular church service. Police later found blood on her front door and signs of forced entry. She was last seen the night before after dinner with her daughter, Annie Guthrie, and son-in-law.

While the first ransom deadline has already passed, authorities have not confirmed the authenticity of either note. However, police say both are being treated as serious leads as the investigation intensifies.

Key Takeaways

  • Second note contains no ransom demand or deadline

  • Message appears to respond directly to family’s social media pleas

  • FBI discovery of rooftop camera and seized SUV raises new questions
