Tourist Claims Rude Treatment in Thailand, Causes Stir

Featured Replies

A foreign tourist named Farah sparked controversy online after posting a TikTok video on February 21, where she claimed that Thai locals were rude to her due to language barriers. In her video, Farah expressed her fondness for Thailand but complained about locals ignoring her questions during her visit, which she found disrespectful.

Farah compared her experience in Thailand to her travels in Turkey and Egypt, stating that Thais were even more disrespectful. She suggested that locals use tools like Google Translate or simply indicate they don't speak English, rather than ignoring visitors. Her comments appear to relate to her experiences in Phuket, identified through clues like a restaurant near Freedom Beach and a staff member wearing a 'Patong' shirt.

The video drew mixed responses from Thai and foreign TikTok users, with some defending Thai people as generally polite, while others criticized her account. Several users questioned Farah’s approach, suggesting she might have provoked such reactions by shouting or displaying rude behavior herself. One commenter reminded her that translation tools are available for her as well.

In a subsequent TikTok video, Farah recounted another incident, claiming a Thai baht bus driver acted rudely and attempted to assault her during a fare dispute. She was seen negotiating a fare of 500 baht and alleged the driver became violent. This incident also prompted varied reactions—some urged her to file a police complaint, while others suspected the fare dispute was exacerbated for video content.

Farah has not elaborated on the details of the incident with the driver, leaving questions unanswered.

Key Takeaways

  • A foreign tourist criticized Thai locals for ignoring her due to language issues.

  • Controversy arose with mixed reactions from online users defending or questioning her behavior.

  • Farah claimed a bus fare dispute escalated into an attempted assault by the driver.

Seems unlikely as Turkey and Egypt are Muslim countries and wouldn't have cared for her lack of clothing or nose ring. But if she feels safe in Muslim countries, maybe she should just holiday there.

The phrase that comes to mind is "Bi$ch please!"

Did it not occur to her that she could use Google translate?

And I do notice that she is speaking a language that is tantalizingly similar to English and it is close enough that I was able to understand her.

Wherever I go, if it’s for more than a few days, I always at least learn how to say “I’m sorry, I don’t speak xxxx language.” I even say it in countries like Germany, where I know that virtually everyone’s fluent in English, it’s basic politeness. I also know how to say it in Russian for my swims at Jomtien beach.

language barrier or not, the driver's behavior was apalling.

however, whenever i see someone going 'don't hit me, don't try to hit me again' I find that it creates a one sided version that can later be used to win over the public opinion

Happily it is Phuket

Ignorant girls! If someone doesn't understand you, get your own translator out. These days it's easy, unlike years ago when smartphones didn't exist. One of the major reasons why I live in Thailand and have a Thai gf is to get away from these types of loud, entitled bitches.

Generally, Thai people are shy to attempt to speak English if they cannot speak it, and would prefer to ignore rather than make a fool of themselves. It is very difficult for Thai people to learn how to pronounce English, as it is the other way around.

Why should a Thai be bothered to pull up Google Translate? Why can't Her Highness pull out her phone and do the work?

Also .... is she being paid by some shady Western media outlet to make Thailand look bad or something? Thais are not normally rude. This is fake news.

Well, have met a real rude immigration officer :-)

And as said; " you dont get a second chance to make a good first impression ;-)

Bit strong 500 baht for a shared TukTuk 😄

Another Tok-Mok who thinks anybody cares what they think!

Just as these young co-funder, woke, feminist, "save-the-planet" teenage types, can really be very self centered, entitled, rude and annoying...so can some Thai's also be, when it comes to being rude and trying to cheat foreigners. Looks more that each side met it's match.

The only thing she should think about, is to go home, stay home and be in a country that understands her. Please, don´t come back!

Quality entitled trollop from London innit. Phuket has a new beach.

Rudeness is subjective. Some nationalities might consider some Thai behaviour rude based on the standard of behaviour in their own country, but that doesn't mean the Thai people mean to be disrespectful; it's just their own way. Ignoring someone is the way they get out of uncomfortable situations without any confrontation.

She is neither woke, nor a save the planet type. A visit to her social media will reveal a self absorbed pushy person.

A foreign tourist named Farah is in the hot-seat after being accused of defaming Thailand.

Well Ms. Farah, you can always go to Vietnam, or Jalisco, Mexico. thumbsup 🇲🇽

When they have over a million subscribers, a lot of people do take notice of what they say, and over this story, a lot of people do care.

In this case, there might even be a potential defamation case if she visits again.

I think the Songthaew driver was hilarious. The guys in the back were quite amused too, and probably glad to see the back of her. Note that only the girl used foul language.

Honestly, if some entitled, mouthy farang gal was filming me while accusing me of "threatening to hit her," I'd throw a couple of fake kicks and fly a finger in her direction too.
I'm coming down on the side of the songtaew driver. Poor guy probably puts up with that 🐂💩 from tourist all the time.

Just listen to her: "Everywhere I go all of the natives suck. They don't treat me like entitled royalty. Don't they know who I am?"

Quality Tourists. Geez lady, just stay home ffs.

Amen that JensenZ. Amen that for sure. The West can keep these types.

Thailand should ban all Western tourists.. they all make problems and don't contribute anything to the community.... That is Thailand need... Maybe they would start to realize what tourists really contribute and that at least they should try to treat them with some respect....

It's an odd world.... to me just some Bimbo too young to know much of life. I feel I have little to learn from her. But hey, at my age I am completely out of touch.
