Thai Railways Ripp Off

Featured Replies

Is it normal for Thai Railways to just rip you off when you cancel a ticket. I cancelled our 3 return tickets from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and within seconds they disappeared from the app with no trace . No refund ....NOTHING

No rip off identified.

Outcome unknown.

Bought then cancelled within seconds is a guy making mistakes

I think you may get a 30% refund. But it would be far better to ask SRT for confirmation.

Easier said than done. From outside the country anyway. And by the time I get to Thailand the cheaters will have spent the cash. Ripped of pre arrival...

What app did you use?

If booked with the SRT dticket website you should get maximum 30% back. Check your payment card account in a month or so.

Yes. I am carrying that western mindset that wants everything settled immediately. Just got to chill out an mai pen ray !

During my 20 years of retirement in Thailand. I regularly used SRT between Chiang Mai, Lampang, Bangkok and Sunghi Kolok. Back in those days I was always issued with a paper ticket.

Smartphones and Apps were not invented! Never any problems with paper tickets which could be easily processed.

For reference Google 6/3/2026 -

Yes, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) issues paper tickets when purchased directly at station ticketing counters. However, they heavily promote using E-Tickets

No further comment from me.

Seems with your attitude you have chosen the wrong country. Go elsewhere, with your mindset it will only get worse.

Got to stick up for Thai railways here.

Just been on a trip,Pattaya Tai- Chiang Mai solely by train.

No buses,taxis or motorbike taxis.

10 train journeys,191 baht. The last journey Lamphun to Chiang Mai 5 baht.

I love the SRT.

OP should read the 'not so fine print' when making purchases.

So do I, but not quite as much in recent years.

Sadly, gone are the days when you could walk along the train to the old wooden bodied restaurant cars to enjoy a hot, Thai dinner, freshly prepared by chefs in the kitchen car using woks. Uniformed waiters served the food with chilled bottles of Beer Chang if that was your desire. None of the aircraft style packaged meals back then! (fortunately). Happy memories.

Thank you all for your kind words of support.

An update on the situation : Thai Railways refunded 30% of the ticket price - with no fuss and bother.

Rebooked overnight train for the south. Reckon there,s too many tourists in Chiang Mai already. Burma Bill -condolences for our lost restaurant cars- agreed ,,, couldn,t beat getting quietly hammered in the old restaurant bogey to the sound of the train clickety clackety along...

Two different religious groups living in the same country but not interacting. Different schools, different housing estates, different cultural activities.

Bangkok, not sectarian.

Narathiwat, you could possibly describe as sectarian.

Kosovo or Rakhine, definitely sectarian.

There needs to prejudice against the other group.

This is not related to the thread and only came about as the phone number was 1690.

The term "Fenian" is a derogatory term for Irish Republicans.

You are likely to hear it from a loyalist, probably from Northern Ireland or the Scottish Central Belt.
