Route 66 closing end of March

Featured Replies

Just went in for breakfast today at Route 66 and sadly they are closing the restaurant at the end March and expanding their motorcycle touring business.

They say they might reopen in the future but who knows. It's a pity because it was quite good and good value for money too. Another member here told me about it only a year or so ago and I only go to go 4 times I think.

We went on Saturday evening at 6 PM and the place was practically deserted. We couldn’t order a milkshake because they said they’d already cleaned the milkshake machine.

Was there any CCTV footage of the incident ?

I’ll get right on that for you.

Tempest in a teapot.

They are probably closing because business is bad.

Thanks to Trump and the US/Israeli war in (on) the Middle East, the American brand isn't as popular as it once was.

That's too bad. I drive past there often but never yet had the chance to visit. But to be frank, it's a terrible location for a diner. Hope they can reopen it somewhere not on the highway.

Wonder if they wil be closing their darkside pattaya location as well ?

I assume they are owned by the same person.

I've never seen the location of this place, but I'll take your word that it is bad.

However, diners in the USA - their birthplace - are mostly on main highways. Usually set back a bit with plenty of parking.

They began in the very early 20th century as railway dining cars converted to eateries and taken off the tracks, but in or near big railway yards catering to the many workers who wanted a good breakfast or lunch at affordable prices.

They became so popular, especially during the Depression, that their locations became more widespread.

During the 1950s big purpose-built glitzy chrome plated diners started to appear and soon replaced the old converted dining cars.

The food was still good even though more was offered on the menus. Most of them were, and are, a good value for the money.

Most businesses along that stretch is a pain to access, especially around that S-curve area by payap & 66

Thanks to Trump

Wow, you really hate Trump ah.

We have a deli here in Pattaya which recently closed.... DaddyDeli, was this closure due to Trump or simply poor management?

Were you guys related..... DaddyWarbucks 😊

A diner on an American highway, and an American diner with Western prices on a Thai highway are two different kettles of fish.

If it was inside the city it would always be full of Westerners.

We went on a Saturday evening last December, about 6pm. We couldn’t order milkshakes because they had already cleaned the milkshake machine. The restaurant was very quiet.

My thoughts were, at that location it’s going to be students from Payap (it’s literally surrounded by dormitories) and therefore the prices have to be lower and go for high volume.

Alternatively, it needs to be in town.

The restaurant was only serving 2 tables at prime time Saturday evening.

I’m not surprised it’s closing.

They were too expensive for the out of town location.

Nothing more.

@JBChiangRai beat me to it!

No it does very well from what I can tell. Prices actually seem too good for value. I think the their tour company just makes so much more money and is easier work then running a diner.

I agree 100%. Location is terrible. Worst part of CM hands down are the highway networks wrapping around the city. Getting there is annoying for most people and there's nothing nice about sitting next to the road. Ozarks on the other hand is my favorite location. It's worth it just for the lovely setting alone.

Is it really? It's all relative and I don't go to many of these places but I feel like I good value for money and it's been under the cost of other places with better locations/settings. If you made that at home I wonder how much it would cost. maybe 50 baht but preparing all of those things for one meal, no thanks.

Every time I've been in there has been late morning to noon and it's been pretty full. Mostly expats with the Thai parent and families actually (not mixed Thai) with kids who I assume are in international schools in the area.

Saw the headline and thought it was about the Pattaya Rt. 66 diner. Glad that one apparently will still be open.

They have had a notice on each table the last couple weeks, as someone already posted, explaining they are closing the restaurant to expand their connecting motorcycle tour company.
