Need to renew 5 year car and motorbike licence in Bangkok

Featured Replies

Hello
I need to renew my already-expired 5-year car and bike licences in Bangkok.

They both expired on 17th January this year.
i'm on a non-immigrant O visa valid until December 2026
I have both medical and residence certificates valid for 30 days

Is the only way to circumvent the 2-3 month wait for a DLT appointment to engage with agents who charge 3000-5000 to do it for you?

If anyone's managed to do so recently, please let me know what procedure you employed.

I don't want to have to go to immigration again if my residence certificate expires during the long wait for an appointment.

Thanks

Hey! Could you take a look at my post few weeks ago about renewing my driving licence in Bkk.

https://aseannow.com/topic/1389344-renewed-my-5-years-thai-driving-licence-at-chatuchak-march-2026/

I had the option to book an appointment just a few days ahead, but I decided to schedule it after my birthday instead so I can get nearly six years on the new licence.:::

Did you go to Chatuchak in person to get the appointment or did you apply online?

Yeap I went there, DLT Smart Queue app or website shows no available slots/blocked out for driver's license services at the Chatuchak (Mor Chit) Department of Land Transport office.

Yes that's what I'm getting using both website and app.

So I guess I'll have to take a punt on the bureaucracy in person.

I spoke with an agent and asked why things had changed since I got my licence 5 years ago.

She said the staff were fed up with the language barrier when foreigners would argue with them after turning up with the wrong documentation.

I asked if Thais had to go through the same appointment system, she said "yes". Obviously blows out her explanation since there's no language barrier with Thais, is there?

I think the DLT offices just realised they could make a bit of backhand cash by selling the appointments to parasitic agents who milk foreigners in return for fast tracking.

OK further to this inquiry, I went to Chatuchak DLT this afternoon and was pleasantly surprised at the efficiency. Nice lady checked my documents, sent me off to get copies of everything and then gave me an appointment for later this week.

She smiled when I explained that the website and the app showed appointment slots full well into May.

Hopefully, I'll have renewed licenses this week.

OK got both licenses on Thursday, took about 45 minutes in total.
Very efficient

Thanks to Walailak for the information about Chatuchak DLT; saved me from paying the parasitic agents 4-5000 baht.

You’re very welcome! Glad it helped you avoid those fees—Chatuchak DLT is actually pretty straightforward once you know the process 😊

Always good to keep those “agent fees” in your own pocket 😄
