Manila has been recognized by National Geographic as one of the top destinations to visit in 2026, noted particularly for its vibrant culinary scene. The "Best of the World 2026" feature highlights the city's local bakeries in Binondo, such as Eng Bee Tin and Ho-Land, famous for their hopia. Manila now stands alongside other global cities like Milan, Québec, and Beijing in this prestigious list, providing a boost to the city's struggling tourism.

This recognition comes at a crucial time as the Philippines faces declining tourism numbers. In 2025, the country saw only 5.24 million arrivals, while neighboring Southeast Asian countries experienced an increase. Analysts attribute this decline to limited travel campaign efforts by the Department of Tourism and infrastructure challenges that hinder easy travel within the country.

Positive responses have emerged, with experts suggesting that the National Geographic listing could reinvigorate interest in the Philippines as a travel destination. Additionally, a recent Klook study shows that Metro Manila ranks high for domestic travel, alongside Cavite, Pampanga, Boracay, and Cebu. Rising international airfare and flight cancellations due to global conflicts are also contributing to increased domestic tourism within the country.

Looking ahead, Manila's inclusion in the "Best of the World 2026" list could serve as a catalyst for renewed tourist interest. The focus will likely be on enhancing travel campaigns and improving infrastructure to accommodate both international and domestic travelers in the coming years.
