The Department of Justice (DOJ) in the Philippines has extended the visas of foreigners affected by the Middle East conflict until May 1. This move, announced by Acting Secretary Fredderick A. Vida, allows these individuals to remain in the country without incurring any costs related to visa fees, fines, or penalties. The extension is described as a humanitarian action, aimed at alleviating the concerns of foreigners unable to return home due to ongoing restrictions.

Previously, through Department Order No. 159, the DOJ had granted an automatic visa extension to those whose visas expired on February 28, initially allowing them to stay until April 1. The new decision extends this period to May 1, offering further leeway for those still facing travel constraints. Vida highlighted the ongoing challenges experienced by visitors in leaving the country and emphasized the compassionate basis for this extension.

Experts note that the extension reflects the country's understanding of the broader travel and logistical hurdles caused by the conflict. This measure ensures foreigners have a legal basis to stay, avoiding potential difficulties with immigration authorities. It is seen as a relief for many stranded individuals, providing them time to sort out travel or alternative arrangements.

Looking forward, the DOJ will likely continue to monitor the situation to determine if further extensions are necessary. Officials urge affected individuals to stay informed about possible changes and maintain readiness for eventual travel when feasible.
