A provincial court in Battambang has charged the son of a senior police official with reckless driving after a hit‑and‑run crash that killed six people, including an unborn child, sparking widespread outrage across Cambodia.

Prosecutors confirmed on Thursday that 20‑year‑old Siv Cheysith, son of Banteay Meancheay deputy police commissioner Siv Socheat, will face charges of “driving carelessly, recklessly and without caution, causing the death of others.” The case has now been passed to an investigating judge for further legal proceedings.

Cheysith had been missing since the accident on 27 March, when a Mercedes‑Benz sports car struck a motorbike carrying five family members along National Highway 5 in Ka Koh Village. The crash killed all five passengers instantly, including a pregnant woman, while a seven‑year‑old child was left seriously injured.

The incident has provoked fury on social media, with many Cambodians demanding accountability in a case involving the son of a high‑ranking police officer. Prime Minister Hun Manet described the collision as a “horrific” hit‑and‑run and ordered senior officials, including Justice Minister Koeut Rith and National Police Commissioner General Sar Thet, to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

Public anger has been fuelled by perceptions of impunity for the children of powerful figures. The swift charge against Cheysith is seen as a test of the government’s commitment to tackling reckless driving and ensuring equal treatment under the law.

As the investigation continues, families of the victims and campaigners are calling for tougher enforcement of road safety rules in Cambodia, where speeding and careless driving remain major causes of fatalities.
