A carved statue of Magawa, Cambodia’s celebrated demining rat, was unveiled in Siem Reap on 3 April to honour his extraordinary contribution to mine clearance.

The ceremony, presided over by Ly Thuch, first vice‑president of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA), paid tribute to the animal whose work helped transform dangerous terrain into safe ground for communities. “Before us stands Magawa – a small creature, yet one who changed the ground beneath our feet,” Thuch told attendees.

Magawa, trained by the humanitarian organisation APOPO, detected more than 100 landmines and explosive remnants during his career. Each discovery meant farmland restored, paths reopened, and families able to live without fear. His legacy, Thuch said, reflects not only APOPO’s innovation but also the collective effort of Cambodia’s operators, institutions and international partners.

The unveiling comes on the eve of International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, observed globally on 4 April under the theme “Invest in Peace; Invest in Mine Action.” The statue symbolises resilience and partnership, reminding Cambodians that even the smallest actor can leave a lasting impact.

Magawa’s story has become emblematic of patience, discipline and trust in the painstaking work of mine clearance. As Thuch noted, progress in this field comes “step by step, detection by detection, field by field.” The statue ensures that Magawa’s courage and contribution will be remembered as Cambodia continues its long journey towards a mine‑free future.
