I am an American citizen currently living in Thailand. I met my fiance (British citizen) in Thailand earlier this year. We've been living together in Bangkok for the past four months but he has to return to London in two weeks. The plan is that we will apply for a fiance visa and I will join him in London as soon as possible.

I have read over some documents and my biggest concern is regarding the amount of money we should have in our accounts. I will have about 2000 pounds when I go over, though my fiance will have more, is that acceptable?

To be honest this is all very new, I could use as much advice as possible!

Thank you :o

Before we get on to the finer details, what is your immigration status in Thailand? Depending upon this, the embassy may ask that you make a settlement application at a British post in the US.

In which case your application should be accepted at the British embassy in Bangkok.

In relation to funds, there is no specific requirement to have a set amount in either your bank account or your fiancé's. The stipulation is that you need to demonstrate that you have between you sufficient money with which to support yourself without claiming public funds. Generally speaking, for your fiancé to be in employment will be sufficient, providing that his earnings are enough to meet any financial obligations and have a bit left over for your upkeep.

You will also need to show that there is ample accommodation for you in the U.K., that your relationship is genuine, and I would also write a covering letter in which, amongst other things, you set out your marriage plans.

All the best,

Scouse.
