Trend in Dining out

Featured Replies

The last two times i went out to a sit down restaurant in CNX I was presented with a QR code and told to "you can order". So I scanned the QR Code, online menu pops up, I make my choices and the the order is sent to the kitchen. In both places there was one girl in the dining room and the rest were in the kitchen. I thought this is the future: fewer humans and more tech. Most of us have seen the ordering kiosks at fast food places but the downsizing of workers at restaurants seems to be a trend as well.

I am from CA(where fast food workers now make $20 an hour to start) and I doubt many back home are aware technology is coming for their jobs. I have seen kiosks and even QR Code ordering in places like S. Korea but I was surprised Thailand seems to be moving fast in the same direction. Maybe it's a good thing? Maybe not.

I'm old school, but QR menus are fine, though yet to order from one. The automated ordering at fast food, KFC, only one I've used, is annoying if anyone in front of you. If so, I walk past and order at the counter. Need to be there anyway, to pay, if I use the auto order thingy.

I'm only ordering a Zinger, and don't need to page thru the meals, then ala carte items to find. Order then pay. "Hi, Zinger, that's all, 79 baht, thank you."

Did exactly that, and was on my way to sit & eat, before the person using in front of me, was even done ordering. Some things work, some don't, and if people use efficiently.

Ex: phone in hand, app open, to pay, before even placing order, while you were in line. Nah, order, take it out of your pocket or purse, open, slow internet, opens slow, if at all, or restart phone, and then pay.

Sorry, I'm walking around you and start to eat, before you're done paying.

Shabushi buffet at the Malls uses a QR code for ordering off the premium menu. My kid is in charge of that.

You know the more I order on a kiosk or with the QR code more I like it. This minimizes contact with employees who are mostly miserable. I understand the misery considering how low most are paid. But the Catch 22 is with more technology in restaurants then less people are needed. Probably not in my lifetime but I see a world where ordering with a smartphone or smart watch, food is delivered by a robot and then only cashless payments are accepted.

An interesting trend too is that there are new tax risks after the cash era of not declaring cash for restaurants. In the electronic area people might think everything gets declared but new technologies can hide transactions, send funds overseas that never see the business bank account, etc. Hope this isn't off topic.

I've used it at the all-you-can-eat buffets at malls and thought it was really convenient.
