Anyone had any issues with Wise / Western union lately

Featured Replies

Need to bring over 400k thb for my visa soon and will be kind of last minute. Anyone had any dramas or holdups with wise or Western uniom bringing money from Australia to Thailand lately?

Had no problem with Wise lately.

Leave your money in a 'safe' interest bearing account in Australia and use an agent in Thailand.

Just a sugestionhappy

Yeah was strongly considering it. Give my money in super a chance to recover after this war crap. Only reservation I have with that is, and not sure if true but I have read once you go the agent route you need to do it every year or anomallies show up next time you DIY your own extension. Normally no need for me to spend the extra $1000 on an agent, just this year it might make financial sense

You mention 400k so assume extension marriage.

Then you refer to agent.

In general agents would not to extensions marriage apart from hand holding exercise.

If you are 50+ you could use agent for extension based on retirement.

An agent would be more like 16k not 1k

Regarding WISE zero issue in transferring funds.

Do you have WISE wallet.

Oz folk a while back were prompted to set up an account Wallet with WISE.

The transfers are instant.

Edit: I now see your extensions are based on Thai child so mustn't be married to child mother.

Think best advice is to do the extension yourself and transfer the 400k

Yes sorry, my post more about wise than the type of extension but yes parent of a Thai child extension. And I wrote $1000, not 1000 baht lol. I had been previously quoted 25kTHB for parent extension which I thought was excessive. Expected it to be more than say a retirement extension as a lot more paperwork. You are saying an agent can not do the whole process? only the paperwork as I can do that myself?

I don't really want to go back to a retirement extension as I had to jump through so many hoops to get the parent visa and a lot more benefit re less money, less requirements, and much lower seasoning time. Back on the main topic have you seen any recent reports of only one month seasoning time for parent extensions. As stated I am at KK IO and always been 2 months at least. We have been told twice over the phone only one month required but I have been told stuff before and was a different story when I got there, and no oh ok, sorry our bad etc. "Sorry, that officer has been transferred"

I transferred funds from Australia to Thailand lasy evening, and they were in the account within minutes.

$5000 from US . “Your money is the money on the way to us” for 4 days, however money was out of my account right after the transfer begun.

No problem with wise from Australia, always in my Kasikorn bank within 5 minutes

It was very slow last few days. Sent $A10k to my Philippine bank. It was TWO DAYS before the tracking said it had left my Wise account in OZ!

I have also had long delays like this in the past on higher transfers.

Dr Jack, I logged onto my Wise account and also downloaded the app but couldn't find anything about a "wallet", even in a help search. I did however find a verify my ID thing where I uploaded a face video of myself then another live selfie showing my face and Passport. Is that what you meant? Even that was a 30 minute struggle to find. Plenty of help topics on how to do it but no links to where you do it on the site or the app. Eventually got there

One other thing I notice they are very secretive about email contacts etc. Best I could do was an online chat which it turns out is a bot. Sort of stuff makes me very uncomfortable. Had an issue with Oz Fourex where a large transfer got held up for 3 weeks, about 800k THB and in the end got through to someone but turns out they needed more information what the money was for etc but no one contacted me about it, no emails or follow up. Took me a few days to get onto someone and then a longer period of time to look into it an sort it out. I thought I had been scammed. Guy eventually called me with a UK accident, grumbling he was just getting out of his car, wait until he gets inside gets my details etc.

Another similar instance with Paypal where I actually did have money heamoraging from my account and the scammer had changed the password on my account. nd the only way to contact them is after you have logged onto your account which I couldn't do. Again almost impossible to contact them at the time anyway by email or phone, just lucky after hours of google searches found a Sydney number for them and the issue was sorted out pretty quickly. Turns out was an internal scammer!

My experience polar opposite.

Previously I would transfer funds to WISE step 1 then transfer to my Thai bank account.

Few years back WISE wanted (Oz customers) to have their own account # with WISE.

That required OTP from my Westpac app.

Once the "payee" was listed on my Westpac app then no problem.

So process now.

1 transfer funds from Westpac to WISE app (instant)

2 immediately (with WISE app already open) transfer from my Wallet to Kasikorn. (Instant)

As for limits. On 5 occasions I have transferred 2mil baht in one transfer for property purchases.

Never had any of your experiences.

BTW: previously used Forex.

They have actual office in Sydney.

Found their assistance via phone (they rang me) fantastic.

Fact is they didn't stack up vs WISE.

Few weeks back there were some extraordinary delays due to the Thai govt putting restrictions on them, which they apparently resolved very quickly, and things back to normal now, Kasikorn in seconds, other banks next day.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have been a WISE fanboy for a number of years.

However, my confidence in them has been eroded over recent weeks. A couple of weeks ago they prevented an attempted transfer from my WISE account into Mexican pesos. I applaud them/their systems for picking that one up but it seemed to take ages to get me operational again. ... even after quickly proving my identity.

Their systems were less effective with the fraudulent withdrawal of 40k Baht yesterday to an account at GSB in Bangkok. Hopefully that will get sorted out satisfactory, but....... I will no longer hold balances with them.
