More than 20 cadets at the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) in Silang, Cavite, were reportedly injured in a hazing incident involving drain cleaner and muriatic acid. The alleged incident occurred on April 3, prompting the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group to apprehend the suspects. The Tactical Officer of the Day was relieved as the investigation unfolds, according to PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr.

Hazing has been a recurrent issue at the PNPA, with past incidents leading to injuries and fatalities. Gen. Nartatez reiterated the police force's commitment to zero tolerance against such acts, emphasizing accountability and sanctions for those involved. The National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) also condemned the act, announcing a task force to investigate further, with a focus on lapses in leadership and discipline enforcement.

The incident comes shortly after Gen. Nartatez's March speech to PNPA alumni, advocating against the academy's hazing practices. This follows another hazing controversy in February involving over 100 recruits in Basilan, leading to significant disciplinary actions. Despite the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018, hazing persists, undermining reforms meant to curb such practices within the institution.

Looking ahead, the PNPA faces increased scrutiny as investigations continue. Authorities are prioritizing reforms and strict enforcement of the Anti-Hazing Act, with potential for significant legal and administrative consequences. The challenge remains to change the entrenched culture that enables hazing within the academy and broader police force.
