Shwedagon Pagoda to Mark Myanmar New Year with Sacred Rituals

Yangon’s iconic Shwedagon Pagoda will host the 1388 Myanmar New Year ceremony on 17 April, ushering in the Buddhist New Year with a series of deeply symbolic rituals. The Pagoda Board of Trustees confirmed that the day’s programme will begin before dawn, blending centuries-old traditions with the serene devotion that defines the country’s spiritual heart.

At 5 a.m., the ceremony opens with the offering of great alms to the Buddha, followed by almsgiving to venerable monks. As the sun rises over the golden stupa, devotees will gather around ancient Buddha images on the southern terrace to listen to Paritta recitations — protective verses chanted by senior monks — and to make offerings and share merits.

By 7 a.m., the celebration moves to Shin Uppagutta Lake in Singuttara Park, where a fish-releasing ritual will take place, symbolising compassion and renewal. “The 1388 Myanmar New Year ceremony will begin with the offering of great alms to the Buddha at the Shwedagon Pagoda at 5 a.m., followed by the offering of alms to venerable monks at 5:30 a.m.,” said U Bo Thin, a member of the Pagoda Board of Trustees.

The Shwedagon Pagoda, believed to enshrine relics of four Buddhas, has stood for more than 2,600 years and remains the most sacred site in Myanmar. Its golden spire dominates Yangon’s skyline, drawing pilgrims from across the country and beyond.

Throughout the Maha Thingyan holiday, the pagoda will remain open, allowing visitors to observe the Dhamma and participate in New Year offerings. For many, this annual ceremony is not merely a religious observance but a moment of reflection — a chance to wash away the past year’s misfortunes and begin anew in peace and generosity.

As Myanmar prepares to welcome the year 1388, the Shwedagon Pagoda once again becomes the luminous centre of celebration, faith, and renewal — a timeless reminder of the country’s enduring spiritual heritage.
