The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Myanmar welcomed the New Year with a splash on Tuesday, hosting its annual Diplomatic Thingyan Festival in Yangon. The event, held on the lawn of the Myanmar Institute for Strategic and International Studies, brought together ambassadors, UN representatives, consular officials and their families for a celebration rooted in tradition.

Deputy Foreign Minister U Ko Ko Kyaw opened proceedings with a warm address before guests were treated to Myanmar delicacies and cultural performances. Staff from the ministry staged traditional Thingyan dances, setting the tone for the highlight of the festival – the communal water-splashing that symbolises cleansing and renewal.

Thingyan, Myanmar’s water festival, marks the transition to the New Year in the Buddhist calendar. It is one of the country’s most important cultural events, celebrated nationwide with street parties, music and the ritual pouring of water to wash away misfortune and welcome fresh beginnings. For the diplomatic community in Yangon, the festival offered a chance to experience this tradition first-hand while strengthening ties with their hosts.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs invited a wide circle of participants, including retired officials, lecturers and students from the Myanmar Diplomatic Academy. The presence of international representatives underscored the festival’s role not only as a cultural celebration but also as a platform for soft diplomacy.

Myanmar’s Thingyan has long been seen as a moment of unity, cutting across social divides and bringing people together in shared joy. By extending the festivities to the diplomatic corps, the government sought to showcase the country’s heritage while reinforcing its openness to the world.

As water splashed across the lawns of MISIS, the symbolism was clear: in a time of regional uncertainty, Myanmar is keen to project an image of renewal, hospitality and cultural pride. For the diplomats and their families, it was a rare chance to step away from formal protocol and join in one of Southeast Asia’s most exuberant New Year traditions.

The Diplomatic Thingyan Festival may last only a day, but its message – of cleansing, renewal and friendship – resonates far beyond Yangon’s festive grounds.
