New Pre-Entry Rule for International Arrivals at Tan Son Nhat

Vietnam's Department of Immigration has mandated pre-entry information declarations for international travelers arriving at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City. The new regulation aims to streamline immigration processing, effective from April 15. Foreign nationals and overseas Vietnamese with visas must submit their personal information before arrival, while Vietnamese passport holders and transit passengers are exempt.

The declaration process involves completing an online form at https://prearrival.immigration.gov.vn/. Travelers will receive a confirmation code to present at immigration checkpoints. Failure to submit the declaration in advance may result in longer processing times, with authorities emphasizing the need for accuracy and timely submission at least three days prior to arrival.

This initiative is part of Vietnam's efforts to modernize immigration management and enhance passenger service quality. By implementing the measure, authorities aim to provide a more efficient and secure experience. Airlines and travel companies are urged to notify passengers about the new requirement, with some Vietnamese airlines already updating their websites accordingly.

Looking to the future, the introduction of pre-entry declarations marks a significant step in Vietnam's commitment to improving its immigration processes. Tan Son Nhat Airport, which handled over 42.4 million passengers last year, including 17.8 million international travelers, stands to benefit from increased efficiency and reduced wait times.

Good news!

A friend of mine who was scheduled to go to Vietnam last week canceled his trip because he said getting a visa was such an incredible hassle for him.

I've been there three times and I never need to go back. It has some beautiful sights, the food is good, and there are some nice people, but I ran into far too many people that reminded me of cold wet fish. No thanks.

This is not correct. Just like the Thai TDAC (and I believe the Malaysian version as well), this declaration can only be submitted within three days of arrival.

What is baffling about all this is...

  • Why was this introduced with no advance warning?

  • How will this speed up processing, when none of the questions in the declaration are currently asked at the immigration counter?

  • Vietnam decided years ago that there was no longer a need for arrival forms. Why did that suddenly change?

I am surprised at this. Most visitors will get 30 days entry visa free. Even my Filipino partner (who doesnt qualify) still got 14 days on each of our 4 visits.

About 50 countries are visa exempt. Notably, USA and Australia are not amongst them.
