But his frequent assertions that a deal is imminent also tell the regime he is desperate to end the war. This makes the regime less likely to make the concessions Mr. Trump needs to claim a legitimate and lasting victory."

As has been noted in other reporting , it was Trump who has been pushing for negotiations. So, if he's misrepresenting the state of negotiations now, it would seem to fit a consistent pattern of making false claims when he's under stress. I suspect the Iranians will keep on slow walking these negotiations. If they close the strait again, what is Trump going to do? Attack Iran? That would probably result in more destruction of oil and gas producing infrastructure in the region on top of a prolonged closure of the strait. That's not going to win the Republicans popularity on the home front. And the midterm elections are drawing ever closer.

The Iranians have got him by the goolies. The Strait of Hormuz is out of Pandora's Box and will be weaponised by Iran to the maximum.

There needs to be an urgent law passed in the USA.

Public officials should be banned form using social media for personal statements.

Social media is a dream to incorrigible narcissists such as Trump but it's extremely harmful for international relations when an idiot is posting drivel 24/7.
