Encumbrances

Featured Replies

Hi all, how to find out if a used vehicle has any encumbrances or liens on it. Thank you for any imput

Look at the blue book for cars and trucks. Green book for motorcycles

If you're still suspicious then don't pay any money untill you and the seller are at the department of land transportation and they have inspected the vehicle and paperwork.

Most often if the vehicle is still on finance a 'dodgey' seller will try to offer just a copy of the book and an excuse.. don't fall for that.

Doesn't that only say the title in their name?

The reg book may have a bank or finance company stamp in it. Or they may have kept the book until a loan is paid off.

If the seller can't produce the original blue/green book then they might have pawned the vehicle to a shady

grey market lender who keep the book as collateral and may try to reposes

the vehicle by literally stealing it.

..if it is on 'official' finance then it will be shown in the book..it won't show how much is still owed for that you have to try contacting the finance company or bank but I don't think they will divulge the info ?
