Public turns on Sussex ‘cash-in’ claims

An overwhelming majority of Britons believe Prince Harry and Meghan Markle should not use their royal titles for commercial gain, delivering a fresh blow to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex after their latest high-profile tour.

A new poll shows a decisive four-to-one margin against the couple monetising their status, with 61 per cent opposing the practice outright. Just 16 per cent support it, with the remainder undecided — meaning nearly 80 per cent of those with a clear view are against.

‘Faux royal tour’ sparks backlash

The findings come after a controversial four-day visit to Australia, branded by critics as a “faux royal tour,” where the couple blended charity appearances with lucrative commercial ventures.

Royal insiders say the trip reignited long-standing concerns that the Sussexes are blurring the line between public service and private profit — precisely the scenario Queen Elizabeth II sought to avoid when she insisted the pair choose between royal duty or independence.

High-price events raise eyebrows

During the visit, Meghan attended a women-only event in Sydney where tickets reportedly reached £1,700, with the Duchess said to earn as much as £130,000 for her appearance.

At the same time, Harry appeared at a business summit in Melbourne, where top-tier tickets sold for over £1,000 — fuelling criticism that the couple are leveraging their titles to command premium fees.

Blueprint for future tours?

Sources close to the couple reportedly see the trip as a success, with one insider claiming: “We’ve tested the playbook; it worked.”

But the public mood appears far less enthusiastic, with growing resistance to what many see as the commercialisation of royal status.

No ‘halfway house’ warning returns

The backlash echoes the late Queen’s firm stance during “Megxit,” when she ruled there could be no “halfway house” between royal duty and private enterprise.

Six years on, that unresolved tension is back in focus — and the British public’s verdict is increasingly clear.
