Myanmar airstrike rattles Thai border village

Bangkok has lodged urgent concerns after a Myanmar military air raid struck dangerously close to Thai territory, forcing residents to flee in panic.

On Sunday morning, Myanmar Air Force jets bombed a Karen National Union (KNU) hospital and surrounding civilian areas in Bue So township, Kayin State, just 500 metres from the Thai border opposite Mae Sam Laep village in Mae Hong Son province. Thai security officials confirmed that nine bombs were dropped, with at least one landing on the Thai side of the Salween River near Mae Wan.

The explosion sparked chaos among locals, who were swiftly evacuated by ranger units from the 36th Regiment. Families were moved to Huai Kong Kaad village for safety as officials worked to secure the area.

The incident highlights the growing volatility along the frontier, where fighting between Myanmar’s military and ethnic armed groups has intensified. Previous strikes have already hit KNU‑controlled zones opposite Tha Ta Fang in Mae Sariang district, with injured Karen civilians crossing into Thailand for treatment.

While the full extent of casualties inside Myanmar remains unclear, the cross‑border impact has raised alarm in Bangkok. The Thai government faces mounting pressure to balance humanitarian concerns with national security, as residents in Mae Hong Son live under the shadow of a conflict spilling across the river.

For now, the message is stark: what began as an airstrike inside Myanmar has become a direct threat to Thai communities, underscoring the fragile line between a neighbour’s war and Thailand’s own peace.
