Do I Really Need A Passport?

Featured Replies

This is a question that a British friend asked me.

Not a common situation, but my friend holds Permanent Resident status.

He is heading towards his mid 80's and has no intention of traveling outside the country.

Personally, I cannot see any practical reason for him to have a passport.

Does PR relieve the need for other identification when dealing with Thai banks? Thai cell phone companies? Other Thai entities? If so, then probably not.

I doubt that there are any members with PR who are in that position, so I guess it is all hypothetical. Can an expired passport be used as ID? He also has a house registration book, pink card and Thai DL... Interestingly, his DL has no expiry date.

I had a 5-year Thai DL renewed and they forgot to put in an expiry date on it. I didn't have any immediate issues until the following summer when it caused huge issues and a long delay at one of those overnight police traffic stops on the Mitrapharp highway. The following month, a car rental agency in Las Vegas wouldn't accept it. A few months later, a finance company refused to accept it as a secondary ID. All because of the missing expiration date.

In Practice - no, I don't think he does strictly need a UK passport to live in Thailand as a PR holder - but going without one could leave him vulnerable.

I guess if he gets in to a situation where he finds he MUST have a British passport, he could apply for a renewal of the expired one and within around a month he would receive it. Until/unless such a situation arises, why bother get a new passport if he's 80 and no intention of exiting Thailand's borders.

....and that is exactly his point.

My take would be:

If he is physically able to get a new one go ahead. He won't need another one?

OR

He can ask the same question in his mid 90's by which time he will care even less.

Technically if he doesn't pass a port; he doesn't need a Passport.
