Temple Forces Pilgrims To Drink Cow Urine In Faith Test

Visitors to one of Hinduism’s most sacred sites are now being required to drink a mixture containing cow urine before being allowed entry—sparking controversy just as the annual pilgrimage season begins.

Authorities at the Gangotri Temple in Uttarakhand have introduced a rule making it compulsory for all visitors to consume panchgavya—a ritual blend of milk, curd, ghee, honey and cow urine—at the temple gates.

‘Test Of Faith’

Temple officials say the move is designed to filter out non-believers. Committee chair Dharmendra Semwal argued that “true believers” would have no issue consuming the mixture, while those “entering in disguise” would refuse.

The measure is being enforced as the Char Dham Yatra gets underway—one of the largest religious pilgrimages in India, drawing millions of devotees to four Himalayan shrines.

Pilgrimage Underway

The route traditionally begins at Yamunotri Temple, before moving to Gangotri, then onward to Kedarnath Temple and Badrinath Temple.

Last year alone, millions made the journey—often involving long road trips and steep mountain treks—with numbers expected to surge again this season.

Backlash Brewing

While cows are revered in Hinduism and their byproducts are used in traditional rituals, the mandatory consumption rule is already drawing criticism.

Opponents argue it risks alienating sections of Hindu worshippers themselves, as well as excluding non-Hindus from spaces that have historically been more open to visitors.

The move also feeds into a broader political debate in India, where figures linked to Narendra Modi’s ruling party have promoted cow-derived products, sometimes with controversial health claims.

Enforcement Questions

With millions expected to pass through the Char Dham circuit in the coming months, it remains unclear how strictly the rule will be enforced—or whether it will withstand growing scrutiny.

For now, one of India’s holiest journeys has taken an unexpected turn—where faith is not just professed, but, quite literally, consumed.

Urine is sterile until it is relieved of mammals. With all those other ingredients, should be palatable.
