Tourist Complains About 150 Baht Coconut at Patong Beach

A foreign tourist has sparked online debate after posting a TikTok video complaining about the price of a coconut at Patong Beach in Phuket. The 18-second clip, uploaded on 22 April 2026, shows the user drinking coconut water while stating he paid 150 baht, comparing it to around 25 baht in his home country.

The video was filmed at Patong Beach in Kathu district and included the caption “Coconut price in Patong Phuket 150baht”. The post quickly gained attention, drawing a wide range of reactions from social media users. Some viewers agreed the price was excessive, while others argued such pricing is typical in tourist areas.

The discussion also saw users questioning the buyer’s decision to proceed with the purchase despite considering it expensive. Comments included remarks such as asking why he bought it if he already knew the price was high. Others suggested that relevant authorities should review pricing practices at tourist destinations.

Additional perspectives came from agricultural voices, with some noting that coconuts sourced directly from farms can cost less than 10 baht. This contrast fuelled further debate about pricing differences between production and retail in high-traffic tourist zones.

Higher prices in areas such as Patong Beach are often attributed to increased operating costs, including rent, location expenses and targeting international tourists. These factors commonly result in goods being priced significantly above those in non-tourist areas.

Amarin reported that as of now, there has been no confirmation of any official investigation into the matter. However, the incident has highlighted differing views between consumers and business operators regarding pricing in popular tourist destinations.

What a chump. No one is forcing you to buy it.

Nor should there be. Go cry into a 25 baht coconut at home.

Why buy if the price is too high?. Sounds the same as selling a fried egg for an extreme price. People can sell for any price they like, but the buyer decide to buy or not. If it is too expensive don't buy, but if you do don't complain.

He is allowed to complain whether he buys it or not. As long as he was made aware beforehand. He could enjoy it while taking a 200 baht baht bus ride of about 500m.

If you buy things in the wrong places, you end up paying excessive prices. Just walk 200-300 meter away from the beach, and you can surely get it for 50 baht. It´s Patong, Phuket so 25 baht will be quite impossible.

But if he didn't buy it he wouldn't have a prop when he did his video and moaned about it .
Either way if you buy something that you know is expensive then surely you are making yourself look stupid.

A bottle of water costs 25 cents in a US 7-11, $1 in the hotel mini-bar, and $5 at the airport.
The item hasn't changed, only the location. But it's not a surprise. It's up to the buyer if he wants to pay.

I agree with your point, but I'd venture to say you haven't bought a bottle of water at a US 7-11 for a long time.

  • 7-Eleven Water (20 fl oz): Approx. $2.09 - $2.19

I haven’t found any reason to go back to the States in the last 15 years. No plans to return for the next 15 years.

Thailand is my home.

Seems a bit steep, but then beach prices always are, especially in tourist areas.

It's common knowledge in the hospitality industri that you pay for where you are served and sits – or stand – a beach on a tropical island is something special. And by the way: You don't need to buy a coconut on the beach, I believe you are free to bring one you bought cheap uptown...whistling

Notice no snap of the pricing at vendor ... not believing anyone charges 150, let alone anyone dumb enough to pay that much.

Maybe you haven't heard about the computer crime act in Thailand!? Naming or posting a photo of the vendor could easily result in a huge fine

thanks for clarifying.

Posting false info maybe, but not accurate info. One could even post a negative review online, if done right.

... " thanks to the vendor, so happy to pay only 150 baht for my coconut " ... 😄

It's fools like him that is the problem here.

If the vendor made no sales all day at that price.....

Thailand has more than it's fair share of farang Cheap Charlies (Parsiminious Pete's, Tight-a-s Terrys😊).

I once saw a farang who I know (who will remain nameless), take the 10 Baht coin out of the change tray and replace it with a 5 Baht coin.
The same guy complained about the fact that in Cambodia there aren't coins in circultion (?) so it's hard to tip, but, their smallest note denomination is about 100 Riel, which I think is 2 point something US cents (so a 1,000 Riel note is around 25 cents?).?

Obsessive-compulsive behaviour?

I dunno who TF you pissed off enough to get the red emperor's death vote for that statement. Seems perfectly reasonable.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Patong is the most expensive place in Thailand with vendors and owners who care about nothing but money. Don't like it? the solution is simple - go somewhere else.

Maybe true !

Waiting for any indication where in a tourist location there are vendors and owners who are sympathetic to beach bounders who expect cheap cheap idolation to foreigners.

Coconuts are 90 Baht from supermarkets in Patong .

150 Baht isn't outrageously expensive

What did the woke tourist expect ? Another of those young types, flying over all over the world and then going back to their home country and giving out on air travel ?

Don't give him any attention, he tries to earn money on clicks.

What makes him "woke" exactly?

Why, well, there's only so much twaddle to share on social media.

He saw something a bit expensive and concluded that there was a god-given piece of expert gleaned info tailor-made for worldwide broadcast.
