Deadly tanker blast rocks Myanmar port

At least two people have been killed and eleven others injured after a fuel tanker exploded in northern Myanmar, sparking a massive fire that spread across a busy port.

The blast occurred on Monday evening in Homalin, Sagaing region, as fuel was being transferred from a truck to the vessel. Witnesses reported a sudden explosion followed by flames racing through the dock, engulfing nearby boats and other tankers. Local media said several of the injured remain in critical condition, raising fears the death toll could rise.

Fire crews struggled through the night to contain the blaze, which was still not fully under control by Tuesday morning. Residents described scenes of chaos as the fire spread at “lightning speed”, with thick smoke visible across the town. One eyewitness told reporters the tanker was carrying thousands of barrels of oil, fuelling the intensity of the inferno.

Authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause, but initial reports suggest the explosion was triggered during the fuel transfer process. Emergency teams are continuing to search the area for survivors and assess the damage.

The incident has revived concerns over safety standards in Myanmar’s river ports. Just last month, a similar accident in Homalin saw two tankers catch fire, killing at least six people. The recurrence of such disasters has prompted calls for stricter regulation of fuel handling and improved emergency preparedness.

Sagaing region has been under strain from ongoing conflict and instability, making large‑scale accidents even harder to manage. For local communities, the latest tragedy adds to a growing sense of vulnerability.

With the fire still smouldering and investigations under way, officials warn the number of casualties could climb. For Homalin’s residents, the disaster is a grim reminder of the risks posed by poorly regulated fuel transport in a region already struggling with insecurity.
