Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay emphasized the critical role of domestic travel in stabilizing the Philippines' tourism sector during the Tourism Congress of the Philippines National Conference on April 29. She highlighted domestic tourism as the foundation of the industry, which requires enhanced regional circuits and diversified travel experiences.

Angara-Mathay detailed strategies to bolster regional travel, including support for community-based tourism, cultural festivals, and niche markets such as wellness and heritage tours. The government aims to enrich the travel experience while ensuring destinations are fully prepared before promotion.

She stressed the importance of "destination readiness," focusing on improving accessibility, safety, and visitor flow. Plans include developing "pasalubong" centers to showcase local products and boost small enterprises.

According to Angara-Mathay, these efforts will not only increase tourist arrivals but also enhance visitor satisfaction, encouraging more repeat travel. Recent data supports this strategy, with domestic tourism expenditure rising by 16.4% from 2023 to 2024, demonstrating a robust demand base.
