Suu Kyi moved to house arrest after years in detention

Myanmar’s former leader Aung San Suu Kyi is to be transferred from prison to house arrest, state media announced on Thursday, marking the first significant change in her conditions of detention since the military seized power in 2021.

A Nobel laureate under guard

Suu Kyi, 80, has been held incommunicado for more than five years following the coup that toppled her elected government. Her whereabouts have long been uncertain amid a civil war that has engulfed much of the country.

State television reported that “the remaining portion of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s sentence has been commuted to be served at a designated residence.” Alongside the announcement, authorities broadcast a photograph of her seated on a bench between two uniformed officials — the first public image in years.

International reaction

At the United Nations, spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric welcomed the move, calling it “a meaningful step towards conditions conducive to credible political process.” He stressed, however, that any solution must rest on “an immediate cessation of violence and a genuine commitment to inclusive dialogue.”

Her son, Kim Aris, voiced deep concern. “I still do not know where my mother is. I do not know how she is. I remain deeply concerned about whether she is still alive,” he said, demanding proof of life.

A long sentence reduced

After a series of trials widely condemned as politically motivated, Suu Kyi was sentenced to 33 years on charges ranging from corruption to violating state secrecy laws. That term was later reduced to 27 years, and further commuted during recent amnesties. The latest reduction coincided with a wider release of prisoners across Myanmar.

Her ally Win Myint, the former president, was freed earlier this month under a New Year amnesty.

A history of confinement

This is not the first time Suu Kyi has been confined to her home. During a previous junta, she spent 15 years under house arrest at her family residence on Yangon’s Inya Lake, where she famously addressed supporters through the gates.

Pressure on the junta

Min Aung Hlaing, the military chief who ousted Suu Kyi and is now president, faces mounting international pressure to release political detainees. ASEAN has barred him from its summits, and Western governments continue to demand reforms.

Last week, he told Thailand’s foreign minister that Suu Kyi was “well looked after” and hinted at “good things” to come, though without detail.

Outlook

The move to house arrest offers a symbolic shift but leaves fundamental questions unanswered. Suu Kyi remains under tight control, her health uncertain, and her voice absent from Myanmar’s fractured political landscape. For her supporters, proof of life and genuine freedom are the only measures that will matter.

ThaiVisa, c'est aussi en français

ThaiVisa, it's also in French

Has anyone (credible) seen her alive lately? I hope she's alive and well.

When was this picture taken?

Seams to me that the junta release it only to calm the international pressure.

And there are no evidences at all that she is still alive

"In response to demands for proof that deposed head of state Aung San Suu Kyi is alive, the illegal regime claimed to have moved the 80-year-old from prison to a smaller detention facility in Naypyitaw they are calling a 'house', without specifying where or what it is, and without showing any recent photos or videos of her. The only photo shared dates from 2022." (Mizzima 4/30)

God bless this woman. Uphill battle against opium warlord military peeps.

But the thought of "democracy" here is impossible as that would mean an educated vote that is just not happening. So you end up with vote for me here is a little (very little) money fiasco.
