Myanmar beauty pageant expels contestant over nun costume

Yangon – A contestant in the Miss Grand Myanmar 2026 pageant has been expelled after appearing on stage in Buddhist nun’s robes, sparking a wave of public outrage.

The organisation announced on 5 May that Ei Mon Lwin, representing Tachilek, was disqualified for violating her contract and ignoring strict rules designed to prevent disrespect towards religion or national dignity.

The controversy erupted during the National Costume competition at the Eravati Sule Grand Hotel in Yangon on 4 May. Ei Mon Lwin performed a segment depicting a traditional ear‑piercing ceremony and meditation while dressed in the robes of a Buddhist nun.

Videos of the performance quickly went viral, drawing sharp criticism from viewers who condemned the use of sacred symbols in a beauty contest as offensive to Buddhism.

National Director U Mahran Seng Naw confirmed the expulsion, noting that the outfit had not been shown during rehearsals nor approved by pageant officials. “Contestants are required to avoid styling that could tarnish Myanmar’s dignity or disrespect any religion,” he said.

The fallout has extended beyond the competition. Local media report that the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture is coordinating with the Ministry of Home Affairs to investigate the incident further.

The Miss Grand Myanmar pageant continues with its remaining contestants, with the grand final scheduled for 9 May. The winner will go on to represent Myanmar at the Miss Grand International 2026 competition.

The case highlights the sensitivity surrounding religious imagery in Myanmar, where Buddhism is deeply woven into national identity. While beauty pageants often push creative boundaries with elaborate costumes, organisers stressed that cultural respect must remain paramount.

For Ei Mon Lwin, the decision marks a sudden end to her campaign. For the pageant, it is a reminder of the fine line between artistic expression and cultural offence in a country where religion remains central to public life.
