Myanmar unveils giant 11,000‑carat ruby

Myanmar’s military‑backed government has announced the discovery of an enormous ruby weighing 11,000 carats, unearthed in the famed Mogok valley. The stone, measuring 2.2 kilograms, was presented by President Min Aung Hlaing on the front page of the state‑run Global New Light of Myanmar, where he was pictured examining the gem in his office.

Officials described the ruby as “exceptionally large, rare, and difficult to find,” highlighting its purplish‑red colour with yellowish undertones and a high‑quality grade. Although smaller than the record‑breaking 21,450‑carat ruby found in Mogok in 1996, the government insists the new stone is more valuable thanks to its superior colour and clarity. No official valuation has been released, but Mogok rubies are among the most expensive in the world, often fetching multi‑million‑dollar prices.

The Mogok valley in Mandalay region has long been a source of fascination and conflict. Its “pigeon‑blood” rubies are prized globally, and emperors, kings and warlords have fought over the territory for centuries. Today, the area remains central to Myanmar’s gemstone trade, an industry notorious for its lack of regulation and transparency.

The announcement comes at a politically sensitive moment. Myanmar has been under military rule since the 2021 coup, which plunged the country into civil war. Min Aung Hlaing, formerly the junta leader, was sworn in last month as civilian president following a tightly controlled election. His appearance with the ruby is seen by observers as an attempt to project stability and national pride amid ongoing unrest.

For the government, the discovery offers a symbolic boost. Rubies are not only a lucrative export but also a cultural emblem of Myanmar’s natural wealth. Yet questions remain over how the stone will be managed, whether it will be sold on international markets, and how revenues might be used in a country still grappling with conflict and sanctions.

Gem traders note that the quality of Mogok rubies makes them highly sought after by collectors and jewellers worldwide. If the stone is auctioned, it could attract intense bidding and shine a spotlight once again on Myanmar’s troubled gemstone industry.

At present, the giant ruby remains in government hands, its future uncertain but its symbolism clear: a dazzling reminder of Myanmar’s riches, unveiled at a time when the nation’s political fortunes are far less luminous.

That's a great ruby but very sad that this murdering piece of dog excretion is holding it so you know where the ruby will go!! Like many things in Myanmar it will be stolen by their illegally instated military leader!!
