Iran’s new supreme leader has disappeared from public view amid mounting reports he was seriously wounded during the opening phase of the US-Israeli war — but American intelligence agencies believe he is still quietly helping direct Tehran’s strategy from deep inside a fractured regime.

US officials now assess that Mojtaba Khamenei, son and successor of the late Ali Khamenei, remains involved in shaping negotiations with Washington despite being isolated, heavily guarded and only sporadically accessible even to senior Iranian officials.

The younger Khamenei has not appeared publicly since the strike that killed his father and several top military commanders at the beginning of the conflict.
