Yangon–Mandalay express launches amid fuel crisis

Myanmar has unveiled a modernised express rail service linking Yangon and Mandalay, offering a rare boost to public transport as the country grapples with soaring fuel prices and economic turmoil.

The new No. 5 Up and No. 6 Down services, operated by Myanma Railways, cut journey times between the two cities to around ten hours. Each train departs at 6:00 am from its respective terminus, arriving late afternoon. The service uses air‑conditioned Diesel Electric Multiple Unit coaches, funded partly through Japanese development loans and state investment.

Configured with six coaches carrying 312 passengers, the trains offer both first‑class and upper‑class seating. Tickets are priced at 34,000 kyats for first‑class and 48,000 kyats for upper‑class, with stops at key regional hubs including Bago, Taungoo, Naypyidaw and Thazi.

The launch comes at a critical moment. Global oil shocks, compounded by the junta’s mismanagement of foreign exchange reserves, have driven petrol and diesel prices to record highs. In April alone, pump prices jumped by nearly two‑thirds, while black market rates in some regions doubled official levels.

This fuel crisis has paralysed road transport, leaving bus companies and private logistics operators struggling to stay afloat. For ordinary travellers, long‑distance bus fares have become prohibitively expensive, pushing many towards rail as the only viable alternative.

Demand for train tickets has surged, with seats selling out days in advance. Commuters and businesses alike are turning to rail to bypass what locals describe as “transport paralysis” on the highways.

For Myanma Railways, the express service is both a showcase of modernisation and a lifeline for a population squeezed by inflation and shortages. Yet questions remain over whether the network can sustain such demand, given the country’s fragile infrastructure and limited resources.

Still, for passengers boarding the gleaming new coaches in Yangon or Mandalay, the service represents more than just a faster journey. It is a rare sign of progress in a nation where daily life has been overshadowed by economic hardship and political uncertainty.
