Police in Cambodia’s Kandal province have arrested a man accused of kidnapping a five‑year‑old girl and demanding a ransom of $10,000 from her parents. The case ended in tragedy, with authorities confirming the child had already died by the time the suspect was caught.

The incident unfolded on Sunday in Prek Ambel commune, S’ang district. According to police, the suspect sent a chilling message to the girl’s parents, ordering them to transfer the money via Wing within an hour. He warned that failure to comply would mean they should “prepare to receive their daughter’s body” and instructed them not to alert neighbours or the authorities.

The parents immediately reported the threat, prompting a swift operation by provincial and local police. Officers tracked down and arrested the suspect, identified as 35‑year‑old Kim Vanna. He is now being questioned as investigators prepare to pursue legal action.

Despite the rapid response, police later confirmed the girl had already died before the arrest. The case has shocked the community, highlighting the dangers posed by ransom kidnappings and the devastating consequences for families.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, with further details expected as police build their case against the suspect. For now, the province is left reeling from a crime that has claimed the life of a young child and underscored the urgent need for vigilance against such brutal acts.
