Is it possible to catch the sleeper to Da Nang without having to buy a visa (which I believe is 1900 baht now). I want to go from Mukdahan and come back in 2 months. As I want to travel with my wife we would in theory need 4 visas for the return trip!

Yes; Google it. Search it on TripAdvisor too. They will prepare you for the shenanigans at the border. Not sure if it's a sleeper though.

If you qualify for Vietnam visa exemption it only gives you 45 days. 1900 baht for what visa? Passport country and current visa status in Thailand would be helpful.

Currently on 90 day visa.

Will obtain a 90 day for Vietnam.

Laos charge about 1900 baht for an entry visa (would need another to come back) so this makes travel through Lao uneconomical, hence the reason why I'm making this post.
