Myanmar bans six media outlets

Myanmar’s military-backed administration has banned six media outlets in its first month of so‑called “civilian” rule, underscoring its determination to silence independent voices despite claims of democratic legitimacy.

The Information Ministry announced on Monday that publishing licences for Myaelatt Athan, Red News Agency and Asia Citizens had been revoked. Just weeks earlier, licences were withdrawn from Myatmaukkhit News Agency and two ethnic Chin outlets, Khonumthung Media Group and Chin World. Officials cited Section 8(b) of the Printing and Publishing Enterprise Law, which prohibits content deemed harmful to national security or public peace.

Editors say the crackdown is a continuation of the junta’s tactics since the 2021 coup. “They changed their administration’s name but not the people within it. That’s why they will not allow press freedom,” said Ko Win Zaw Naing of Red News Agency. Ko Ye Thwin Hein, founder of Myaelatt Athan, added: “It’s the habit of dictators; they will never accept independent media.”

The bans come amid sweeping emergency powers declared in 60 townships last month, allowing military courts to impose the death penalty on critics, including journalists. Since the coup, more than 200 reporters have been arrested, with 18 still behind bars, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

International watchdogs say Myanmar’s press freedom has collapsed. Reporters Without Borders ranks the country 166th in its latest index, down from 138th in 2020. The Independent Press Council Myanmar condemned the regime’s actions on World Press Freedom Day, demanding the release of detained journalists and restoration of licences.

The regime insists it is an elected government following polls held late last year, but those elections excluded genuine democratic parties such as Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy. For many, the bans confirm that the new “civilian” façade is little more than a continuation of military rule.
