Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul criticised corrupt Phuket officials accused of enabling illegal land encroachment at Freedom Beach. The controversy gained national attention after People’s Party MP Chaloempong Saengdee said he received death threats while investigating the occupation of public beach and forest land. He alleged that parts of protected land under Khao Nak Kerd National Forest had been converted into a luxury resort project, with visitors charged 300 baht to access the beach. A suspect linked to the alleged threats surrendered to police and denied involvement in both the encroachment and intimidation claims. Authorities are now preparing demolition steps for illegal structures as officials work to return the land to public use.
