Trump Heads Home from China Empty-Handed After Xi Plays Him For A Fool

Trump and Xi.jpg

Flags, Banquets And Flattery — But Few Real Wins

Donald Trump returned from Beijing with plenty of pageantry, glowing praise for Chinese leader Xi Jinping and a fresh set of photographs beside marching soldiers and waving schoolchildren — but little evidence of any major breakthrough on trade, Iran or global security.

The US president was treated to the full imperial welcome during his two-day visit to China, complete with military bands, lavish banquets and choreographed ceremonies inside Beijing’s Great Hall of the People.

But behind the spectacle, critics say Trump left with remarkably little to show for one of the most politically sensitive foreign trips of his presidency.

Instead, Beijing appeared to use the summit to reinforce its own power and prestige while offering only limited concessions to Washington.

Xi Draws A Hard Line On Taiwan

While Trump repeatedly praised Xi in public — even calling him “a great leader” and “my friend” — the Chinese president used the summit to issue one of Beijing’s starkest warnings yet over Taiwan.

According to Chinese officials, Xi warned Trump that mishandling the Taiwan issue could lead to “clashes and even conflicts” between the world’s two superpowers.

The warning highlighted the enormous gulf that still exists between Washington and Beijing despite the carefully managed optics of the summit.

China views the self-ruled island of Taiwan as part of its territory and has dramatically increased military pressure around the island in recent years.

The Trump administration meanwhile continues supplying Taiwan with billions of dollars in weapons, something Beijing sees as direct interference in Chinese affairs.

Iran Remains The Biggest Failure

One of Trump’s key goals heading into the summit was believed to be persuading China to help pressure Iran as the conflict in the Middle East continues to threaten the global economy.

But Beijing gave little indication it was prepared to significantly shift its position.

China remains heavily dependent on Gulf oil and has deep economic ties with Iran, including discounted purchases of sanctioned Iranian crude.

Despite American hopes, China stopped short of offering concrete help to force Tehran into reopening the Strait of Hormuz or curbing support for Iran’s military infrastructure.

Instead, Chinese officials merely repeated their longstanding position that Iran should not obtain nuclear weapons and that the conflict should end diplomatically.

That fell far short of what many in Washington were hoping for as global energy prices continue to surge.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi further undercut Trump’s diplomacy by declaring Tehran had “no trust” in Washington and would negotiate only if the United States proved serious.

Boeing Deal Fails To Impress

Trump attempted to present a reported order for 200 Boeing aircraft as a major economic victory.

But analysts noted that Boeing had long hoped China would purchase far more aircraft as its aviation market expands.

The agreement also paled beside the broader economic imbalance between the two powers.

China continues dominating critical rare-earth mineral supply chains essential for electronics, electric vehicles and military technology — a strategic vulnerability Washington has struggled to counter.

Meanwhile Beijing’s military expansion continues at pace across the Pacific.

Critics Say Trump Was Outplayed

Critics of the president argued the summit resembled his earlier high-profile meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska — heavy on symbolism but light on substance.

They accuse Xi of using carefully choreographed hospitality to flatter Trump while extracting diplomatic advantage without making major concessions.

Trump also sparked controversy with remarks about Xi’s height and appearance during a Fox News interview after the summit, comments critics branded awkward and racially insensitive.

While Trump spoke warmly of personal chemistry with Xi, Chinese officials were notably colder in their official statements, focusing instead on warnings over Taiwan and broader geopolitical rivalry.

China Plays The Long Game

The summit ultimately reinforced a growing perception among many analysts that China is playing a far longer strategic game than Washington.

Trump remains focused heavily on short-term political victories, domestic optics and headline-grabbing announcements.

Xi, by contrast, is overseeing a decades-long strategy aimed at expanding Chinese economic, military and diplomatic influence worldwide.

Even as the United States remains the world’s largest military and economic power, Beijing increasingly appears confident it can outlast shifting administrations in Washington.

For now, Trump leaves Beijing with photographs, ceremonial praise and promises of future dialogue — but with the Middle East still burning, Taiwan tensions rising and no major trade reset in sight, critics say the “goody bag” he carried home looks remarkably thin.

Was anything else expected, outside his 'cult'? 🤣

Is this "cult" you speak of the one that believes chromosomes denote gender rather than feelings and mood on a given day?

Are you speaking in opposites again?🤣

Once again, it is the Taiwan question which looms everlastingly.

This is the one issue that cannot be resolved.

And, this is why the issue has not been painted in clearer terms, decade after decade.

We must maintain the ambiguity if we are to continue to enjoy relative peace in the Taiwan Strait.

However, Xi is becoming antsy: As Xi ages, he realizes that he is running out of time to force Taiwan to bend and kneel, just like Hong Kong.

If the Taiwan question could be resolved, just by granting Taiwan an additional 100 years to settle the issue, then there would be every reason to expect long-term peace between China and the USA.

Nobody wants war between China and America.

That would be the end of everything.

Gee, focus on the world's most important issue, why don't you.

Trumpers are such a kick.

Trump sucked up to Xi like a nerd trying to win a date with the Prom Queen. It was embarrassing for a former World #1 like the US. The whole world watched the "handover" to China as #1.

Hey, but Trump did go home with some rose seeds.

Don't panic MAGA' he gave Xi' two weeks or two weeks more to surrender all their rare earth minerals or face 20,000% tariff's🤔

You bring this up regularly, must be the latent feelings you're hiding. No worries, you can come clean, we won't be judgemental.

Well it took off a bit of heat on his failure in Iran. Has he given any date yet to Bomb Iran back to the stoneage or will he give it a little more time, as there " Still Talking "

Yep. It would have been better if Xi gave him some balls to put in his ballroom.

As usual, more mind control drivel from Trump's enemies in the fake MSM media.

I will be looking into what's going on in China more carefully and may start a thread, which will only get 6 views and a bunch of thumbs down, but will be more accurate than this MSM fake news drivel.

This meeting was highly significant, or Musk and all the CEOs wouldn't be out there. These multi-billionaires have better things to do than waste their time flying across the planet for nothing and to leave "empty handed".

It's sad how you people still buy all this crap news and think Trump is stupid and all the top CEOs in the US are idiots.

Henry Kissinger is credited with the saying: Power is the ultimate aphrodisiac.

There are some things even centi-billionaires cannot buy -- and being on a trip like this and all attendant is one of them.

he's not nor has he ever been the master of any deal, whatever deals he made must have been by blackmailing the other side, he's just a disgrace, he looks lost like a senile old man, he should quit while still has a little of followers if he waits long enough he will lose all of it but he did make billions with trading but he didn't report it

Flying back to the U.S. from Beijing, Donald Trump made it clear that he knew his state visit to China was a flop.

He was in a lousy mood.

In his answers to question after question from the press, he revealed that the trip produced no true deliverables

Nixon was a bad president but his failures and crimes pale in comparison to Trump.

Also I don't think he was particularly financially corrupt or a grifter like Trump who is without any doubt the most corrupt president in history. Also in the end he respected the constitution, and we already know Trump has no regard for the constitution or rule of law. It feels weird saying good things about Nixon but now we know how bad a president can really get. The founders never imagined a Trump would ever happeb,
Nixon's major accomplishment was opening up China.

I truly wonder if Nixon had been shown a video of a US president supplicating before a modern Chinese emperor whether he might have decided -- never mind, better not do it!

How about absolutely nothing came of it.

There is precious little to Trump's epithet of "fake news". Yes, it works with the goobers and the willfully ignorant, but the main stream press is pretty thorough and accurate. Those tossing out that remark never provide proof of anything the MSM said that was inaccurate. On the other hand, it was "State Media" Fox that got sued over Dominion voting machines for propagating lies.

Trump uses the epithet when he is dissed by real reporting.

Yes, many CEOs went out there. So what? They got nothing, save for a ride of AF1 and expedited Customs.

Oh, and Xi never made that comment about Thucydides while Biden was President. Trump always tries to blame others, but Xi was dissing and warning Trump directly with that comment.

You are obsessed with transgenders. You bring them in to almost every unrelated topic.

Didn't Trump say something along the lines of he was going to China to tell Xi what kind of behaviour he expects from China? Then comes back telling Taiwan what China told him to say.

He's a pathetic worm and absolutely every world leader knows how to play him. It would be embarrassing to be an American, especially one who blindly backs him no matter what, and doubly especially one that also bangs on about transgenders constantly.

Oh dear.

Anyway how are the Emperor's new clothes?

Every time Trump negotiates with a leader such as Xi, Putin Kim or anyone else of consequence, he nearly always comes back empty-handed. I don't know how long it's going to take for people to realize that this man could not negotiate his way out of a paper bag if his life depended upon it. The entire art of a deal narrative is so fake it boggles the mind.

We can always count on Trump to fail when it comes to protecting the interest of the average American. So far I give his second term a big fat F grade.

Higher inflation, higher unemployment, lower quality of life for the average American, tens of thousands of generational Farms lost or sold through his policies, tens of thousands of small businesses ruined and closed, and dozens upon dozens of promises broken, in addition to enriching himself by many billions of dollars through completely corrupt practices.

How about you just take an "AI overview" to a prompted question without even reading the links it gives you and then make yourself look foolish? You think Trump persuaded Xi on the spot?

Here's the Al Jazeera one for you from your AI snippet:

https://www.aljazeera.com/economy/2026/5/15/trump-says-china-to-buy-200-boeing-planes-much-lower-than-expected

Weird that Boeing haven't announced this sale as they absolutely always would. They simply said they have reopened the market to Boeing. And neither has China confirmed it. And he just said "planes", not even a type of plane. Here are a few clips from the article you didn't read:

The deal “includes approximately 200 planes and a promise of up to 750 if they do a good job”, Trump told reporters on Air Force One on Friday. More details about the deal, such as which type of jets and when the order would be delivered, were not immediately available.

Neither the Chinese government nor Boeing issued statements confirming the purchase agreement.........Planemakers usually disclose large deals once they are formalised.

It was not immediately clear how many of the 200 planes announced by Trump represented new business for Boeing versus aircraft already in its order backlog.

And also weird that Boeing and GE Aerospace's shares fell after Trump's announcement. It's almost as it that wasn't a very good deal (if it even happened). Again it is in the link you posted but didn't read.
