Gaza Airstrike Reportedly Hits Hamas Military Chief

Israel says it carried out a major strike in Gaza City targeting Izz al-Din al-Haddad, the elusive Hamas commander described by Israeli officials as the final surviving architect of the October 7 massacre.

The airstrike hit a residential building in Gaza City’s upscale Rimal district on Friday evening, sending huge plumes of smoke and debris into the air as residents fled the area in panic.

Within minutes, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed they had personally authorised the operation.

They described Haddad as “the commander of Hamas’s military wing” and one of the central figures behind the October 7, 2023 attacks that killed around 1,200 people and triggered the devastating war in Gaza.

Israeli officials said Haddad was responsible for overseeing hostage captivity, directing attacks against Israeli forces and refusing proposals backed by US President Donald Trump aimed at disarming Hamas and demilitarising Gaza.

‘Ghost Of Al-Qassam’

For years Haddad cultivated an almost mythical reputation inside Hamas.

Nicknamed the “Ghost of al-Qassam,” he operated almost entirely in secret, rarely appearing publicly and constantly moving between underground tunnels and safe houses to evade Israeli intelligence.

According to Israeli and Arab officials, Haddad survived multiple assassination attempts during the war and had a reported $750,000 bounty placed on his head.

He eventually rose through the ranks of Hamas’s Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades before taking command following the deaths of senior Hamas leaders including Yahya Sinwar and his brother Muhammad Sinwar.

Israeli sources say Haddad spoke fluent Hebrew, carried photographs of Israeli hostages on his mobile phone and frequently surrounded himself with captives to deter assassination attempts.

Hostages Celebrate Reports Of His Death

Although Hamas has not officially confirmed Haddad’s fate, reports of the strike sparked emotional reactions from former Israeli hostages who say they were personally held under his control.

Former hostage Liri Albag, one of several female surveillance soldiers abducted from the Nahal Oz base during the October 7 attack, said Haddad had overseen the tunnels where they were imprisoned.

“He held us captive. He was responsible for so much suffering,” she said.

In a furious social media post written in Arabic, Albag added: “Every dog has its day.”

Former hostage Emily Damari also welcomed reports Haddad had been killed, describing it as “a very important closing of a circle.”

“He planned my abduction and kept me in Hamas tunnels,” she said. “With God’s help we will reach all those garbage terrorists.”

Massive Strike Planned For Days

Israeli security officials said the operation had been prepared for more than a week after intelligence agencies tracked Haddad’s movements.

Military sources said Israeli intelligence received fresh information on his location shortly before the strike, prompting immediate approval from political leaders.

According to officials, three Israeli fighter jets took part in the operation, dropping 13 bombs on the target area.

A second strike reportedly hit a vehicle leaving the building simultaneously in an apparent attempt to prevent Haddad escaping.

Gaza medics said at least three people were killed and more than 20 wounded in the strikes, though it remains unclear whether Haddad was among the dead.

Israeli officials say there are “initial indications” the strike succeeded.

Ceasefire Now Hanging By A Thread

The attempted killing threatens to shatter the already fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

The strike marks the highest-profile Israeli assassination attempt since the US-backed ceasefire agreement reached last October temporarily halted major fighting after two years of war.

Negotiations over Gaza’s future remain deadlocked.

Israel continues demanding Hamas disarm completely, while Hamas has resisted surrendering its weapons or relinquishing control of the territory.

Israeli media reports suggest Haddad had emerged as one of the biggest obstacles to any long-term settlement, particularly after refusing pressure to accept demilitarisation proposals.

Last Surviving Architect Of October 7

If confirmed dead, Haddad would become the final senior Hamas commander directly tied to planning the October 7 massacre to be eliminated by Israel.

The attack that day saw Hamas-led gunmen storm southern Israel, killing civilians, attacking military bases and abducting 251 hostages into Gaza.

Israel’s subsequent military campaign has devastated much of the enclave and killed thousands, while also eliminating much of Hamas’s senior leadership.

But despite repeated Israeli claims of victory, Hamas fighters continue operating inside Gaza and still hold surviving hostages.

For many Israelis, Haddad symbolised the lingering shadow of October 7 — the last senior commander still alive from the group that planned the deadliest attack in Israel’s modern history.
