Gall Stones

Featured Replies

My Grandneice has undergone an operation for removal of gall stones. She is only 27.

I believed that gall stones were an affliction of middle-aged or elderly women.. She has reputedly undergone keyhole surgery and the hospital want to keep her for at least a week.

My questions are these:

are gall stones common for young women?

is ultrasound, likefoe kidney stones not viable?

for keyhole surgery is a full week in hospital normal?

Medical experts only to reply please.

It can be a tricky operation. They'll remove the gall bladder. The issue is the amount of internal organs that suround the gall bladder. If there is swelling and infection, care needs to be taken.

There is also a chance that some stones may have already escaped into the bile duct. That will be the reason they want her to stay in for a further week.

It is generally something older people would suffer from but there are many factors. Diet being one.

Mostly caused by lack of exercise.

Gallstones are hard fatty balls of cholesterol, not hard so that ultrasound does can help.

Deep fried and oily foods are a major culprit for causing gallstones, causing the gallbladder to work harder and thereby releasing excess bile, then it becomes thick and hard pebbles.

Last year I was getting pain in right ribcage, Local University Hospital said gall bladder out, keyhole job, Bht 40,000. One night stay before the op, drove myself 30km back home next afternoon. No problems since.

NO DIAGNOSE:

Start with your last question. Many patients will be discharged after a laparoscopic the same day or after one day if no complications.

Main Reasons for gall stones in that age might be in the genes (ask your family), or weight loss recently, or hormonal influenece (contraceptiva).

You get discharged once that squeeky toy on the side, that's capturing the bleeding, can be removed. That's usually 2-3 days later, if no complications. Done it recently.

Gallstones are more common in middle/old age but can occur at younger ages too.

If symptomatic or stones large, treatment is to remove the gallbladder. There is no way to break up the stones otherwise. Cannot do lithotripsy like with kidney stones.

Uncomplicated endoscopic (keyhole) GB removal would not normally require more than 1 night in hospital but I have no way of knowing if your niece has complications that require longer treatment.

Is she in a government hospital? These are not likely to keep patient longer than needed. Private hospitals though sometimes will.

If she feels well, has no fever, able to eat and drink etc then family should ask what further treatment is being given and why.

Will, that's just a misleading peace of luck. Most attacks are recurrent not constant.

Usually same day or stay for one night. Obviously there had been some complications with you. I'm really sorry.
