Permanent move to Thailand

Featured Replies

The family is relocating to Thailand along with our belongings. Looking for some info for those who have done this move.

Wife is Thai and kids have Thai citizenship. My understanding is that we we allowed to ship our stuff duty free, correct?

Also, we are looking for a logistics company who can handle a full container load with door to door service from North America to Thailand -any recommendations for a reliable company (preferably first hand experience)?

Thanks

In wrong forum. Will move tomorrow for best advice.

Perhaps add detail of amount of goods.

eg a container. Size?

Edit: see you state one container.

IMO unless precious goods best to start over.

Sorry for the wrong forum. I couldn’t figure it out.

We are looking for a 40ft container. I have some personal items (like a jukebox, etc) that I must bring. Since the difference in cost between 20 and 40ft containers is not that big, we decided to bring stuff like clothes, beds, household stuff etc.

I am not sure if the container size has any impact on my question - the logistics would be more or less the same.

Thanks

The OP in attached thread has links to relevant advice

I’ve read it and found it very interesting.

However, the experiences with the logistics companies date 7 to 15 years ago, and the world has changed dramatically since.

I was hoping someone has had some more recent experiences and recommendations.

Realize that. Just bumping it.

Will leave thread in this forum for time being.

Hopefully someone with recent experience will post.

You’re probably already aware, leave the single voltage device behind and don’t bother with converters. North America 120&240v @ 60hz, Thai 220v @ 50hz.

I use this reliable company for shipping 'my cannot do without shopping like All Bran and Vegemite' from Australia to Thailand they also do containers from US......

But I agree with @DrJack54 start over...'. I could not justify a container full of my furniture etc as it's more cost effective to buy new in Thailand.

Yes, I have bought a bunch of 5000w converters. For the juke - there is a simple spring that handles the 60-50hz conversion:)

For the juke -

Importing a Jukebox from other side of world to Thailand.

That's out there.

There is more « old junk » than just the juke, but I am too embarrassed to share my hoarding history online lol…

Fine... Won't ridicule your plans.

As, the saying goes different strokes for different folks.

Good luck with your relocation.

You mentioned electronics if they are 120 you will need a converter here so they are not damaged by the 220-240 volt

Hi -

We used Schumacher Cargo Logistics to move furniture from San Francisco to Phu Paman back in 2019.

Based out of LA.

They were terrific.

Showed up at SF on time with good workers..

Were flexible with how I packed the container, as I made some last minute changes.

Had to pay some import tax, but caused no delays.

Delivery was made door to door.

They guys they set were also great and patient.

One very small item was damaged - Not a big deal.

We used Asian Tiger for our move from South Korea to Phuket a couple years ago. They were efficient and timely with their services. One container, everything arrived undamaged and intact. Would highly recommend them. Cheers, Ron

I have used Rama Enterprises out of New York, in 2015. They knew the routine for shipping from US to Thailand and having a container-full amount is right up their alley. We were located in the Washington, DC area, and that was no problem.

Ship it all in the wife's name, and ensure it arrives within a year of her physically travelling back, and that should be the case.
