May 22May 22 Cambodia has adopted a new civil aviation law that paves the way for future direct flights to the United States and Europe, though officials stress that such services remain a distant prospect. The legislation, signed in January and presented publicly this week, updates the framework first introduced in 2008. It is designed to modernise air traffic management, encourage investment, foster competition and strengthen environmental protections. The State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA) says the law brings Cambodia closer to International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards, boosting the credibility of Cambodian-registered airlines abroad.“This does not mean there will immediately be direct flights to the United States or Europe,” SSCA spokesperson Sin Chansereivutha explained. “But it is an important legal and institutional foundation to support long-haul air connectivity in the future.”Cambodia’s airports, including the new facilities at Siem Reap and Takhmao, are technically prepared to handle large aircraft such as Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s. Yet industry observers caution that demand, regulatory approvals and airline partnerships will dictate when direct services become viable. For now, travellers rely on carriers like Emirates and Qatar Airways, which connect Cambodia to Europe via hubs in the Middle East.Tourism officials are eager to see progress. Cambodia Tourism Board executive Kim Minea has promoted the country at international trade shows to stimulate demand, while Thourn Sinan of the Pacific Asia Travel Association’s Cambodia chapter said the law demonstrates the government’s commitment to expanding long-haul connectivity. For Cambodia, the challenge lies in turning legal readiness into operational reality. The new law may boost confidence among international partners, but the timeline for direct flights to the US or Europe remains uncertain.-2026-05-22 ThaiVisa, c'est aussi en français ThaiVisa, it's also in French
