Putin’s missile warships loom 30 miles off UK coast

Russian naval vessels armed with cruise missiles are operating just 30 miles from the British coastline, escorting sanctioned tankers through the English Channel and testing the limits of the UK’s response.

The manoeuvres have unfolded repeatedly over the past two months, with Kremlin warships and support vessels loitering near critical British infrastructure while under constant surveillance from the Royal Navy and Nato allies.

Shadow Fleet Pushes Into Open Waters

At the centre of the operation is the RFN Admiral Grigorovich, a heavily armed Russian frigate capable of launching cruise and surface-to-air missiles.

The warship has been supported by the PM-82, a floating repair and supply ship serving Russia’s Baltic Fleet. Together, the vessels have operated near the Galloper wind farm off the Suffolk coast — infrastructure powering around 400,000 UK homes.

According to maritime intelligence analysts, the Russian ships have escorted more than a dozen sanctioned “shadow fleet” tankers through British waters. Some are suspected of transporting fuel, military supplies and equipment linked to Moscow’s war effort in Ukraine.

Oil Spill Fears Meet Military Tensions

Photographs shared online showed inflatable fenders attached to the Russian support vessel, equipment commonly used for ship-to-ship fuel transfers.

Naval analysts warned such operations near UK waters carry major environmental risks. Any accident during offshore refuelling could trigger a serious oil spill close to vital British infrastructure.

But security experts say the wider message from Moscow is even more dangerous.

Elisabeth Braw of the Atlantic Council said Russia was deliberately signalling that attempts to detain shadow fleet tankers could escalate into direct military confrontation.

Britain Watches as Moscow Tests Resolve

Despite increasingly aggressive rhetoric from Downing Street, Britain has yet to seize a single sanctioned Russian tanker.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer previously vowed to crack down harder on Putin’s shadow fleet, while military powers were expanded earlier this year to allow forced boardings of suspect vessels.

Yet hundreds of sanctioned tankers have continued sailing through Britain’s Exclusive Economic Zone largely unchallenged.

Royal Navy patrol ships and Wildcat helicopters continue tracking Russian movements daily. Nato says allied forces are monitoring every Russian naval deployment across European waters.

The message from Moscow is becoming harder to ignore: Russia’s shadow fleet is no longer hiding in the shadows.

Putin’s cruise missiles are operating 30 miles off the UK and Russia won’t move them

Yeah so what, why the hysterics? Russian ships typically approach within 30-40 nautical miles of the UK.

So the the PM-82 is a floating repair and supply ship!

Well that's a good start, I suppose.

The UK should beg the Russians to stop the illegal rubber dinghy crossings as they obviously have no warships of their own to turn back the invaders.

They wont though as the 'government' actually wants the invasion to continue.

The Russians are off the UK coast because being near the Ukrainian coast is risky.

Well if the UK had any sort of deterrent ( like Iran) perhaps they wouldn't be ?

but we see they have no deterrent by the numbers of illegal rubber dinghy invaders that they

dismally and consistently fail to stop.

The government wants to be invaded.
