An American English teacher and his Cambodian accomplice have gone on trial in Phnom Penh accused of sexually exploiting 20 boys.

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court heard yesterday that William Chandler White, 27, a US citizen employed at a private English school, and Pen Chanrith, 22, from Por Senchey district, face charges under Cambodia’s anti-trafficking law. Presiding Judge Hong Marinich said White is charged with procurement involving child prostitution and child pornography, while Chanrith is accused of aiding the offences.

If convicted, both men face prison terms of seven to ten years.

Police from the Anti-Human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection Department arrested the pair in August 2024 in Sen Sok district. Investigators allege Chanrith arranged for 20 boys, aged 14 to 18, to be taken to White’s condominium, receiving $30 for each child. White is said to have paid the boys around $100 for sex, selecting them from photos shared on Telegram.

During the hearing, Chanrith admitted meeting White in 2024 and bringing street children to him for sex. White told the court he had arrived in Cambodia as a tourist before finding work at the school. He acknowledged his actions, saying: “I accept the mistakes and I will not ask the court to reduce my sentence. I ask the court to decide it in accordance with Cambodia’s laws.”

The case has drawn attention to the vulnerability of street children in Phnom Penh and the role of social media in facilitating exploitation. A verdict is expected on 25 June.

What makes you say that ?

Really sick. Hoping U.S. authorities get involved so that if convicted and able to pay his way out, he faces charges in the U.S. which will be a lot more severe.

If the DOJ is aware of his crimes and these are not addressed in Cambodia, they will throw the book at him. He can get up to 30 years.
