I fortunately do not have personal but work experience:

Ankle fusion surgery is used to eliminate or relieve chronic pain by fusing the joint.

The reason is the loss of cartilage which is caused by arthitis (post traumatic-,rheuma-, osteo-, deformities)

The procedure will last about 90 min. The bones have to be positioned at a 90 degree angle and will be fixed by screws, plates, or rods.

Concerning your question: recovery requires patience.

The first week(s) you won't walk, the following 4 weeks no weight bearing, but able to walk in a cast or orthosis. After 3 months intensive physio. Feel free to ask questions.

I understand you very well. Orthopedic insoles and shoes might help you. In addition physio. "Johns Hopkins medicine" got a full article about Ankle Fusion.

I've had an ankle fusion on both ankles at the same time. Plus 10 years later I had to have a TTC nail removed and replaced. You're worrying too much. Just go with the flow. By the way which hospital are you using?

The questions that you are asking here should be asked of your surgeon before the operation. I have had multibile surgeries in my life and when I meet with the surgeon or his team I ask them any questions that I may have before the op and get the correct answers. I know that some Doctors are arrogent and unfriendly and want to dismiss you but you have to push them.
