India’s Mizoram strained by Myanmar influx

Mizoram’s Chief Minister Lalduhoma has warned that the continuing arrival of displaced people fleeing conflict in Myanmar is placing a heavy burden on the northeastern Indian state.

Speaking at the North Eastern Council meeting in Shillong on 4 June, Lalduhoma said the influx was creating major financial and administrative challenges. “Yes, due to geopolitical situations, we currently have many displaced persons fleeing to our side… This has become a major burden for us,” he told reporters.

Official figures estimate more than 40,000 Myanmar nationals are now living across 11 districts of Mizoram, while humanitarian groups put the number at over 70,000, including those in camps and rented homes. Relief is still being distributed, but the prolonged presence of such a large population has strained public services, infrastructure and local resources.

Residents have voiced concerns about social friction, drug trafficking and pressure on the labour market. On 3 June, police in Champhai district arrested eight people and seized heroin worth more than seven million rupees, underscoring the security risks linked to cross‑border migration.

Fighting in Chin State’s Kanpetlet and Mindat townships, and fears of junta offensives near Rikhawdar, could trigger further arrivals. To curb illegal migration and smuggling, the Indian government has resolved to fence the entire 1,600‑kilometre border with Myanmar.

The issue dominated discussions at the NEC meeting, which also focused on the “North East Vision Plan 2047” to boost regional development. Lalduhoma said proposals for increased financial assistance to support displaced communities were under consideration.

For Mizoram, the challenge is not only humanitarian but structural: balancing compassion for those fleeing violence with the need to protect local stability and resources. The longer the conflict in Myanmar persists, the greater the strain on India’s border state.

Where has building a fence ever stopped migrants? Will they commit to getting Myanmar to pay for it?

Perhaps letting them earn a living and taxing them will raise the economy.

India has done well to reduce extreme poverty in the nation by 80%, "primarily driven by targeted government welfare programs, including subsidized food and direct benefit transfers, coupled with broad structural growth." But does the government have the fortitude to further divert its economy for the displaced people fleeing conflict in Myanmar?

Likely I think if very targeted with real GDP growth projected at 6.6% to 6.9% for the ongoing 2026-2027 fiscal year following a robust 7.7% growth in the previous financial year. Spend border fencing funds on infrastructure and exports.
