Myanmar resistance seeks Canada’s backing

A senior delegation from Myanmar’s anti‑coup resistance has wrapped up a diplomatic tour of Canada, aiming to strengthen international support and present a newly unified alliance against the military regime.

Led by National Unity Government (NUG) Foreign Minister Zin Mar Aung, the group visited Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa, where they formally introduced the Steering Committee for the Emergence of a Federal Democratic Union (SCEF). The body brings together the NUG, the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) and four of the country’s most powerful ethnic armed organisations—the Karen National Union, Karenni National Progressive Party, Chin National Front and Kachin Independence Organization.

Zin Mar Aung stressed that the alliance was designed to offer a credible federal democratic alternative to the junta, dismissing speculation that it might seek compromise with Min Aung Hlaing’s newly installed government. She was joined by senior resistance figures including NUG presidential adviser Kyaw Zaw and Karenni leader Neineh Plo.

In Ottawa, the delegation met Robert Oliphant, Parliamentary Secretary to Foreign Minister Anita Anand. Oliphant reaffirmed Canada’s support for Myanmar’s democratic future, calling for an end to violence and full humanitarian access for the millions displaced since the 2021 coup. Canada has already imposed sanctions on more than 240 individuals and organisations linked to the regime.

Talks were also held with MPs Garnett Genuis and Adam Chambers, co‑chairs of the Parliamentary Friends of Democratic Burma, to coordinate policy approaches.

The SCEF’s creation reflects both unity and complexity within the resistance. While it consolidates military and civilian opposition, internal disputes have seen some groups suspended from the broader National Unity Consultative Council. Even so, the Canadian tour underscored the resistance’s determination to project cohesion abroad and secure lasting international backing.
