Money Transfer from Thai Bank OUT of Thailand via Wise.

Featured Replies

I have a Wise account which I have used to lend some money to a Thai friend via her Wise account. From there she gets it transferred to her Thai bank account. (Bank takes a small handling fee.)

She wants to pay me back (yes, seriously).

She has apparently not been able to get any help (I believe her by the way, she is trustworthy) from her bank as to how to transfer the money back into Wise and out of the country. It's only a few thousand Baht and definitely not a sum to set off alarms or breach limits.

Can anyone tell me, if at all they have, how they have transferred money from their own Thai bank account to a Thai Wise account (or a foreigner's Wise account directly) and thence on to someone else's Wise account.

So transfer:

Thai bank account -> Thai owned Wise account -> foreigners Wise account

or

Thai bank account -> foreigner's Wise account direct (using account number in Belgium?)

I'm sure this is not a completely outlandish maneuver except perhaps for local hick branches of certain Thai banks.

Any help much appreciated.

Why transfer to another WISE account, do it directly to her Thai bank.

I recently transferred from a Thai bank account to Wise Singapore, the money arrived within seconds, fee was 199 Baht for international transfer. The Wise account is Thai and SGD was the fastest option. You cannot yet transfer directly in Baht to Wise Baht currency option. You also can use Belgium in Euro but it will take longer time to be credited.

Thanks for the reply.

I See. So she should transfer it direct to my Belgian account (the one behind my wise account).

To confirm: she cannot transfer THB to her Wise account then on to my Wise account correct?

Wise -> Wise functions perfectly within seconds. Never considered messing around with Thai banks directly.

But the issue now is getting it back to me and the banks have not been helpful there .....

So she could theoretically transfer THB direct to my Belgian (Wise) account (presumably for 199THB fee) where I could exchange it for euros. ?.

She cannot transfer THB out of the country. International transfers must be done in foreign currencies, the transferring bank will do that.

If you have time you may want to wait for this to take effect on August 3. I plan on seeing how well this works when it happens.

I have found Thai banks to be not only less than helpful, they have given me blatantly false information. I have been able to transfer money to the US using their phone app, where there is no (apparent) human intervention, but the exchange rate sucks and there are extra hidden charges.

Thanks very much for your time and info. We'll do it that way to start with. Then I see Higgy88 has some good news right after your post that looks like the color of the future.

Many thanks and may all your transfers be smooth.

Thanks very much for that Higgy. I wonder if she's even been deep enough into her Wise account recently to see that. Looks like the shape of the future.

Many thanks and happy transfers

Thinking a bit deeper into that (and hopefully not too mut) I suspect that's because of the way Wise operates in Thailand. They keep a certain THB stock there to operate with because the THB can't be exported. Maybe they're going to boost their THB stock (from abroad) so they can also export THB without affecting the reserve they hold there. Or something like that anyway. Again, thanks.

just use DEEMONEY to send money out of Thailand

and Wise to send money to Thailand

Not true ! If one has a foreign currency deposit account one can transfer the foreign currency directly into that account ie if one holds a sterling deposit account in Thailand you can transfer sterling directly into that account .

I think you misunderstood. It is not possible to transfer Thai Baht out of Thailand. It has to be exchanged into foreign currency to be transferred. Your example of an existing foreign currency account has nothing to do with that.

I'll look into that. Thanks.

Looks like she'll have to convert into euros at a rubbish rate, then transfer to my euro account abroad for a 199THB fee.

I'll cover that out of the sum itself to save her the money. I think the principle is more important that she pays me back.

From August it should all be cheaper and easier if this crops up again.

🙏 to those who responded.

I spent two days trying to do that and gave up (I'm not sure under Thai banking rules it is even possible via Wise)......I did a SWIFT international transfer in the end, 1,000B.

The Thai baht is a managed currency and the banks do not want to handle transfers out so they will not be very helpful. From the posts on here over the years it has been a bit hit and miss with the banks.

A few years back I tried to send a small amount of my own pension back to the UK and had to produce all sorts of documentation.

From AI

To transfer money out of Thailand through a Thai commercial bank, you must satisfy strict Bank of Thailand (BOT) rules regarding transaction thresholds and underlying financial documentation.

As far as Wise is concerned it is not any different, I have account details for Wise just like I have for HSBC. The form used for the transfer by the Thai bank would be the same and have the same problems.

It is possible.

When I did it the form was titled

"APPLICATION FOR OUTWARD MONEY TRANSFER"

No seriously 555

Anyway, I'll update when things start happening. She's already asked me for my IBAN and Swift/BIC so it shouldn't be long ...

She's already getting to grips with the bank - I'll post when I've got news. It may serve as a guide for others.

Banking

The banks won't send THB, they will convert to your currency then send to your bank.

It's not a good conversation rate, it's far better to have THB converted your end.

I think YOU made the mistake when you stated :

"International transfers must be done in foreign currencies, the transferring bank will do that." Why not just accept your statement was in error !

Indeed. The form I referred to asks for the currency and amount to be transferred.

Very quick though. In my UK acount by the time I got home about 20 mins later.
