Greater Manchester vote set to deliver major political test

Bev Craig, the leader of Manchester city council, is running for mayor in the byelection on 30 July

Britain's biggest-ever byelection is set to become an early verdict on the country's political direction as voters choose a successor to Andy Burnham as Mayor of Greater Manchester. With more than two million people eligible to vote, the result will be watched closely for what it says about Labour's resilience, Reform UK's momentum and the Greens' growing ambitions.

The 30 July contest is unprecedented in scale and carries national significance far beyond the city region, which controls major powers over transport, housing, policing and health.

Labour Faces First Big Test

Burnham dominated the mayoralty for seven years, winning comfortably at every election since 2017. But his departure leaves Labour defending one of its strongest regional power bases without its most recognisable local figure.

The challenge comes after bruising local election losses across Greater Manchester, where Reform UK swept into former Labour heartlands including Wigan, Tameside and Rochdale. Labour believes a change in national leadership could help recover voters who drifted away earlier this year.

Reform Targets Breakthrough

Reform UK enters the race buoyed by recent local election gains but faces a different electoral challenge. If no candidate secures more than half the vote, second-preference votes will decide the winner under the supplementary voting system.

Political analysts suggest that could complicate Reform's path to victory if rival parties' supporters unite behind Labour or another candidate in the final count.

Greens Eye Historic Opportunity

The Green Party is also seeking to build on recent gains across Greater Manchester, arguing its local successes reflect a lasting political shift rather than a temporary protest vote.

Strong performances in Manchester and surrounding boroughs have encouraged party strategists to believe they can compete with the established parties for influence across the region.

National Stakes Beyond City Hall

The outcome will resonate well beyond Greater Manchester. Control of a mayoralty with a multi-billion-pound budget makes the post one of the most influential elected offices outside London, while the result will offer one of the clearest indications yet of how Britain's political landscape is evolving.

Whether Labour reasserts its dominance, Reform converts momentum into executive power or the Greens make another breakthrough, the contest is shaping up as one of the most closely watched electoral battles of the year.

Biggest ever byelection will test nation’s mood – and Burnham’s credentials
