If you’re American, do you miss those holidays?

Featured Replies

I suppose I miss July 4th most. Absolutely nothing to do with patriotism or nationalism or love of country. America just knows how to blow things up. And July 4 was my grandmother's b'day when she'd smoke her annual cigarette.

I love fireworks and mostly watched them over the East River but also with my sister in NJ and my son & grandkiddlies in PA. Did the Nutley Oval, and the beach at Beachwood. Driven to Point Roberts WA (where I got arrested for the Vietnam draft).

A Jewish couple who were good family friends—the doctor delivered me—asked me if I missed the US. I told them only the fireworks.

The Symphony of Fire off English Bay is pretty cool, fireworks timed to the Vancouver Symphony.

We have fireworks over the Chao Phraya for Loy Krathong and New Year. Good enough for me.

I certainly don't miss the orgy of consumption at Xmas. T'giving with grandparents and aunts was great. I got to take a puff on my uncle's cigar and crawl under the table looking under all the aunts' skirts.

Easter was maybe the best. Dyeing the eggs and hiding them. Out on our Island, the crows got most of the hidden eggs first! We always had--really long--clues for a treasure hunt leading to a jar of coins we've collected all year buried on the beach. Here in Thailand, the eggs come pre-dyed!

Why am I writing this today? Nostalgic I guess.

Happy 4th.

Apparently the Symphony of Fire is no more, sadly.

I remember a long time ago attending 4th of July celebrations in DC. It was a very hot hazy day, as I guess it often is there. It was quite enjoyable with the parades near the White House and the general vibe. Happy families, kids, etc. But then by early to mid afternoon it was all over and the streets fell absolutely quiet. It was like everyone disappeared at once. A bit scary actually, as central DC can be a bit dangerous. I remember trying to get back the hotel fairly quickly after that. I was a bit surprised that things/events didn't go on for longer.

Even if I were NOT American, I would still miss the 4th.

I would also miss Thanksgiving, since it is one of the very few Family Holidays that exist in America.

Christmas is a DOWNER, and so is Easter, although I periodically read the two Wonderland books, from time to time, or excerpts, anyway.

I think that America needs some better holiday.

Maybe a tax holiday, or something.

The Tax Holiday is April 15th.

I miss most all the holidays.

It's possibly a 'downer' because Americans love Thanksgiving more than Christmas. Thanksgiving is THE family get together for Americans. Christmas, falling just a month later, is an optional get together. If there was no Thanksgiving then Xmas would be the main show.

I think in the areas I have lived, Christmas is always the main show. The holiday season starts with Thanksgiving, and ends with New Year's.

Can we agree to move Christmas to the month of July, where it ought to be?

Well, I'm bummed the Symphony isn't happening anymore. I've watched it from Kits and on a friend's balcony overlooking English Bay. Play the Symphony on FM.

No fireworks the year you were in DC? Yeah, it's not so safe. Or do you mean everybody hurried off after the fireworks? That's pretty normal anywhere.

Did you stay at the Trump?
