Pale officials collect Starlink user data

Local administrators in Myanmar’s Sagaing Region have begun gathering information from Starlink satellite internet users after devices were suddenly blocked as “Region Restricted.”

The Pale Township People’s Administration Team (PAT) said the data will be submitted to the opposition National Unity Government’s Ministry of Communications, Information and Technology, which is working to restore access. Township in‑charge Zaw Htet told Mizzima that the ministry may even negotiate directly with SpaceX, the company behind Starlink.

Since early July, Starlink devices in parts of Myanmar have been rendered unusable, cutting off a vital communications lifeline in resistance‑controlled areas where the junta has restricted internet services. Residents, businesses and opposition forces rely heavily on the satellite network for connectivity and online money transfers.

A statement issued on 6 July instructed users to provide 12 categories of information, including names, ID numbers and device serial codes. Officials stressed that no taxes have yet been levied on Starlink devices in the township.

SpaceX restricts usage in countries where it lacks official permission to operate. The sudden blackout has raised fears of a communications vacuum in Sagaing, one of the regions most affected by conflict.

“If Starlink can no longer be used, it could immediately affect communications, the flow of information, and online money‑transfer businesses,” Zaw Htet warned.

For now, users are left waiting to see whether the opposition government can secure a solution, as the blocked devices highlight the fragility of digital lifelines in Myanmar’s war‑torn regions.
